Discussion: White Privilege in LGBT 'Community'

I always find it quite odd when I see a black man/woman being homophobic the reason for this is because they should know what it is like to feel picked on for something they can't help.. It's quite upsetting. As the previous poster said the amount of homophobia in the black community is shocking.

No one seems to ever have preferences against white people. Whenever racial preferences are expressed, they almost always exclude people of color. Making a statement that you aren't sexually interested in black or asian people for instance robs them of the dignity they deserve of being viewed as individuals. White people have no issue being seen as one of many permutations of physical features that may or may not be attractive to someone. Whereas black and asian people are written off even though an unfathomable degree of variation exists within those groups.

lemme guess: all blacks are too dark, they have big noses and lips. Indians are also too dark and are too hairy. Mexicans are too oily....

What the hell are you talking about? The LGBT community isn't some sacred postracial utopia. Race has always been a huge issue within it.

Sadly, we behave as if it is the 1950's.
How dare you say that a black person gets more descriminated for being gay than being black? What if you don't have, let's say something we regard as typical gay mannerism. Do you think he gets bad treatment because he is gay? He can even hide this mannerism when walking down the street, but he can not hide his colour.
The ignorance some of you display is so, so annoying when you wanna blame those who talk about these issues. It's the typical "get over it"-mentality.
Accepting, appreciating and respecting OBVIOUS and VISIBLE difference is the key sis. Not pretending as if you don't see them. When you don't see them, you ignore the problems and therefor you are part of the problem.

I completely agree. the music thing is stupid. It's music. It doesn't belong to any race. It annoys me when people complain. I mean I know iggy has done stupid things in the past but hating on her because she's a white rapper is stupid. If you want to dislike then dislike but don't dislike just because she's a white rapper. "She mimics people's sound" yeah well so does nicki she does many different accent's do you see anyone being offended by her? No. People really need to chill out about this thing, and concentrate on the more important things like people actually getting killed for being a certain race, or getting killed because of their sexuality.
Also if you complain about racism and you find it a serious matter, Please don't use word like cracker e.t.c I know it's not even near as bad as a white person using the n word. But seriously you're fighting fire with fire.

all asians look the same
all hispanics look the same
every white person is unique and I won't overlook a single one

Well, when every example of other people's experience is referring how people on GRINDR treat them, then I lose interest in caring. You don't go onto Grindr for sensibility, sorry. That doesn't speak to how the LGBTQ community as a whole (because Grindr is a very small sect of the community) on these issues. I just feel like a lot of people look for racism more than anything else.
Also, privilege exists for all people. As a black person, I go to college for practically free with an ACT score that is lower than my white friends that have taken out many loans to go to school. Privilege is not exclusive to white people.

Yes it is. The media, your parents, everyone around you from a young age show you that the most desirable person physically is somebody that is white, blonde, blue eyes, etc. So, you grow up with this mentality, which continues, as the European features is the epitome of beauty agenda still surrounds you every single day. I don't condone racism AT ALL. It's completely uncalled for and unethical .. but it seems like nowadays if there is a white person seen .. it's 'white privilege' or if a white person so happens to win above a person of another race it;s 'white privilege' right off the bat.
EDIT: I also see how we were just talking about how you never see white gays hanging out with blacks or asians .. what about it being the other way around? When have you seen a group of blacks or asians hanging with a bunch of white twinks? It goes both ways. Honestly it should just cease and not matter what your race is you should just step up and be proud of who you are. |
