My goodness, the generalizing in this thread is ridiculous. If people don't know of certain bands/artists that I love, it's not that big of a deal. If someone hasn't heard of Muse, I may try to suggest songs to listen to, but if they don't want to listen to them, don't like them, whatever...that's their prerogative. I grew up around rock music, so that's what I'm going to gravitate toward (though my childhood also featured a lot of pop music, older country and older pop). Others grew up surrounded by R&B or Pop or Country or Rap or whatever other genre, so they may gravitate toward those styles of music. I totally get that.
As a predominantly rock fan, I'm also not about to pretend that I'm better than anyone or my taste in music is better than everyone else. I don't listen to everything out there. I listen to what I want to listen to, just as pretty much everyone else in this thread does. I try to listen to as much music from as many genres as possible, but sometimes, it just doesn't work out. As a long time ATRL rock fan whose favorite artist, for many years, was Korn, I'm not about to pretend that I am superior to someone who listens predominantly to pop or R&B or country or rap. I'm not. No one is superior based on music taste. Music taste is 100% subjective.
Having said that, I do feel like some basic understanding of the history of music and how we got to this point in time should be encouraged. It's fine if you've never heard of a bunch of artists that I love or a bunch of artists that have had an impact on me personally (nor would I EXPECT you to have heard of these artists), but I would, at the very least, expect someone to have heard of a band that was as influential and as important as Pink Floyd, a band that has been a big influence on artists from multiple genres. They were on the same level of importance as artists like Led Zeppelin, Queen, and, yes, David Bowie. Not knowing who Pink Floyd are and not liking/listening to their music are two completely different things.

Music that appeals to you, its music that can capture you no matter if it was released yesterday or a century ago. And believe me, everyone can find music they would love in every time period.

But according to you, who were the inspired and great bands of their time?

Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, CCR, etc. just to name a few.
Thematically, they were so typical and could be bunched in with acts like Alice Cooper. Vocally, they were monotonous and boring. I hate them sfm, though it is ironic that someone who stans artists that put out video anthologies wouldn't know them, I guess.

Hfdu.
The Eagles have Desperado, Take It Easy, Hotel California, etc.
Pink Floyd have The Wall.
Few huge bands are as awful as PF.

I am not a rock fan by any means but what Sam Smith said was ignorant and embarrassing and he needed to be put in his place. Also not knowing who Thom Yorke is, the frontman of one of the most influential bands in history, just shows you are an illiterate when it comes to music and you shouldn't be in the business to begin with.

Im taking Pink Floyd over Led Zep anytime
I wouldnt call AC/DC or CCR more inspired, and certainly not more progressive

Omg, this has just became all the more tragic now that I think about it.

I don't see how that makes a difference. I asked my 14 year old nephew who was the lead singer of Destiny's Child and he didn't know. I found it amusing considering how much I play Beyoncé and DC but I didn't think anything else of it.

Neither of these bands experimented nearly as much as Pink Floyd did sonically.

I know all of these iconic bands and like them. But I prefer Britney Spears Jessica Simpson and Cheryl Cole over them all. And proud of it I'm a big flaming sissy and its no ta damn thing these hipster heifers can do about it.

Not all of them but a big part of them think that just because they listen rock music their taste is superior and **** when the genre has nothing to do with the quality of the music but w.e.

Funny how when someone doesn't know a rock band/star = uneducated, ignorant
Someone doesn't know an R&B/Hip-Hop artist = The artist is obviously just local!!!!!111

Judging you, ngl
I will admit that they were visionaries when it came to music videos and beat MJ, Madonna and almost even MTV with The Wall, but I still hate their music.

I bet some of y'all can't name a Tupac or Biggie song.
So are you all uneducated embarrassing ignorants that don't know timeless music?

Oh and to the question, they get defensive because rock music is the most iconic genre with the most remembered artists/bands and if you call yourself a music fan yet don't know the basics of the rock genre then you look stupid.
