The puffing my chest lyric makes the song for me. It makes this song pathetic (in a good way, not creepy because of it) and cute. And when I hear it I think of Looney Tunes cute version of the chicken pictured above. Because of that I wish someone else sang it who would give it a Lana Del Rey VIdeo Games collage treatment.
39. Rise Like A Phoenix - Conchita Wurst
YAAAAAASS, CONCHITA, YAAAAS.
Just a strong, anthemic song to steal your man back to. Just a melodramatic song that's more theater than anything and that's what I find makes it great.
38. Boom Boom Clap - Charli XCX
Pretty much pop perfection. Charli her ability to switch from sultry songstress to chanting cheerleader >. There's something really clever to it, that I feel is missing from Sucker. Sucker pretty much misses the mark for me by only staying at that ditzy shouting cheerleader area with nothing to contrast it in most songs. I think Famous is the only song that doesn't stay so much in one spot.
37. Run - Nicole S.
I don't use Nicole, maybe I do a bit enough to give her music a shot. I'm glad I did either way. The first time I heard this track I was taken aback. Just surprised by all of it. Personally, I can't think of many songs that are written with this perspective. There's plenty of I'm stronger now, and **** you songs, but how many are written to ex-man's next girl? With a protective tone towards them? Just really powerful stuff. I will fault it for the opening stringed instrument notes though, they're very "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and extra.
36. Sweet November - SZA
Boring artist who made a few good songs. This is one of the rare great ones. Genius sample, great lyrics, trendy vocal. Hope she figures herself out as an artist and comes back with stronger material.
35. Dangerous - Big Data
Just a really well crafted enjoyable song. First time I heard it I thought it could have been made by an array of big names (which may not be the best thing )
34. Nude Beach A Go-Go - Azealia Banks
Azealia released probably the most creative album this year. I almost wish SZA was next to her so I can bash her some more in comparison. Just one of the unexpected songs in BWET, that's thoroughly a fun time. Has that soundtrack-y sound without being Charli XCX stagnant.
33. Numbers - FKA twigs
I originally had a very long twigs drag here. LP1 has me so divided and I go back and forth between hating and loving it. Either way, this is one of the high points. It's a stand out for the same reason as Two Weeks, Give Up and Video Girl. Just at a point where I feel everything is purposeful and precise and not just stylized and abstract for the sake of that FKA twigs sound she already established. I do really love this song though, as I do the other songs on this list. I don't know why I go so negative constantly. Repurposing her breathy sounds to evoke the obvious here is SO clever to me, one of the best "moments" in music this year to me.
32. Go - Grimes
Another immaculate, precisely crafted song. In the same vein to me as the last few. Just a really great track, fairy level etherial vocals and then club pleasing beats at the snap of a finger. Was wowed from the first listen and still am.
31. Big Eyes - Lana Del Rey
Lana at her trademark visual evoking, haunting best. It's so powerful and I'm ??? It's like a punch to the face every time. To me, I just get the sense of Lana flexing why her musical greatness here. That bridge is just SO good and I don't think I've heard something so delicate and light from her before.
