Just like every other year, there's always a new batch of artists to come around and dive into the mainstream. Even if they haven't been the most successful in terms of charts, all 5 of these artists have made waves in some type of way in 2015. Where will their careers go later on? That's yet to be decided, but for now they're enjoying their time in the limelight.
| Jess Glynne
Biggest Single: Rather Be (with Clean Bandit)
Favorite Song: Hold My Hand
Discovery Story: Last year, Jess simply caught my attention by collaborating with Clean Bandit on the huge international hit Rather Be. After the song simmered, I didn't know what the status of her career would be, but I was open to any material she was willing to put out. Luckily she did release more singles, such as Hold My Hand and Don't Be So Hard On Yourself, as well as a full-length debut in August. It took me a while to actually get to hearing it, but once I did, I was bopping to a lot of the tracks. Her music is very positive and uplifting in both the messages and the beats, which I really love. |
| Troye Sivan
Biggest Single: Happy Little Pill
Favorite Song: EASE (ft. Broods)
Discovery Story: Troye's name is not one that I've heard for the first time in 2015. I knew he was on YouTube (though I haven't watched his videos) and I also knew that he put out an EP last year (though the first single, Happy Little Pill, simply didn't interest me.) Flash forward to this September when WILD - EP released, and I pretty much instantly became obsessed with his (new) music. The EP was on constant repeat until the full length album, Blue Neighbourhood, came out, and both feature a slew of stunning tracks with amazing instrumentals and lyrics with significantly deep messages. |
| Meghan Trainor
Biggest Single: All About That Bass
Favorite Song: Bang Dem Sticks
Discovery Story: I actually saw the video for All About That Bass right here on ATRL. This was maybe two days before it suddenly blew up and sprinted towards the #1 spot on iTunes, and then Billboard later on. At first I wasn't completely sure if I enjoyed the song, one side thought it was cute while the other thought it was somewhat annoying. It then grew on me as I heard it more and when she put both her EP and album out, I enjoyed all the tracks. I love her modernized doo-wop sound, and she's shown that she's talented in terms of singing, songwriting and more. |
| Melanie Martinez
Biggest Single: Carousel
Favorite Song: Carousel + Soap
Discovery Story: As millions of others can say, I've known about Melanie since her days on The Voice. I've only fully watched a few seasons but luckily one of them was when she was on (as well as Cassadee Pope.) I rooted for her as I enjoyed her voice, look, performances and the effortless way she slayed. A year and a half later, she finally put out a single, and I was amazed by it right from the start. Then came the Dollhouse EP, and now after years of waiting, a completed album. Luckily it was all well worth the time. |
| Ryn Weaver
Biggest Single: OctaHate
Favorite Song: The Fool
Discovery Story: Honestly, I don't think I would've known about her if it wasn't for ATRL. OctaHate was her debut single and when is rose to the top 200 or so on iTunes, there were plenty of people rooting for it and hyping it up. At first I wasn't interested in listening because I thought the song title was weird () but when I eventually gave it a listen, I was really impressed. So impressed to the point that days later I went to iTunes, bought her EP (which is rare for me to do with a new artist), and listened to it as if I had no other album in my possession. Well, until The Fool came out, which I repeated the whole process for. |
