begin again is everything. The escalation in the chorus takes you out of this world
Sufjan, Donnie, and Miguel

MØ makes her second overall appearance on my countdown, after "Slow Love" appeared on last year's list. I'm glad she was able to revive her career after that disaster on SNL and the huge flop "Beg for It".

Right? My favorite thing though is that she continued the dancing in the Lean On video She won major points with me for that.

Pretty much perfect picks from these musicians! The Romeo description was making me laugh for some reason I guess just the dismissal of the "nerdy stuff" haha. I actually like Ch-Ching more than it but love both!
Happy to see St Jude get a bit more love. I think it's her best slow song she has and it impacts more on an album like HBHBHB. The title track and WKOM are my #1 and 2, but I think SJ is my #3

grimes - "flesh without blood"
Years ago, I never could have predicted this pop-rock-ish song from Grimes as the lead single from her new album. But, then again, I don't know why we ever thought we could box Grimes into one small genre or subsect. She's shown that she's pretty varied in her musical inspirations, so that should come across in her music. I view this song as a conversation between Grimes and her detractors. She sings part of the song as her critics, who deride her for her continual plunge into the pop world, and then spends the next verse responding to the criticism. It's a pretty clever way to tell your "haters" to eff off.

chvrches - "leave a trace"
Chvrches said they wrote this song as a diss track, and when you just read the lyrics out, they are pretty biting ("Take care to leave a trace of a man" - ouch!). But Lauren's voice is so light and airy that it's hard to see her as menacing. "You talk far too much for someone so unkind" has got to be one of my favorite lyrics of the entire year. It's such a polite way to tell someone to shut the hell up.

kelela - "rewind"
Since that day I heard this song, I knew it would be in my Top 50. Over time, every listen got stronger and stronger, until it eventually ended up in the Top 10. This song is that perfect combination of R&B and pop that is so hard to find sometimes, but is a true treasure once you find it. It reminds me of a young Janet - what she would release if she were debuting in 2015. It's a shame this won't break out on radio because the song deserves it. I'd heard of Kelela a couple of times (mainly because of Solange), but she'd never left much of an impression on me until this song. I'd love it if she kept going in this direction in the future.

carly rae jepsen - "run away with me"
ATRL's #1 song of 2015 makes its appearance on my countdown at #7. Cee-Rae really brought her A-game in 2015, and thankfully it paid off critically, if not commercially. "Run Away With Me" has just the right mix of nostalgia and contemporary pop that makes it a modern classic earworm. There's such a romanticism in the soaring chorus that is so uplifting. That middle 8 is also ridiculously hooky and memorable. "Over the weekend, we could turn the world to gold." There are just so many great things about this.

father john misty - "holy shit"
This song was #1 on my countdown for the longest time! It got bypassed eventually by a few other great songs, but it's still a solid #6. While "Run Away With Me" has its own certain romanticism, "Holy ****" offers the same but in an entirely different way. It's funny to me to hear FJM sing all of these big, controversial ideas about society, religion, philosophy, whatever else, but it ultimately is just a simple love song. You keep thinking, as you're listening, that eventually there's going to be some point to his rant, but ultimately, he ends it with, "What I fail to see is what that's gotta do with you and me." <3 True love.

courtney barnett - "pedestrian at best"
List this under "Least likely song to make my Top 10". I would've never guessed it going into 2015, but this rock song really hits me ****ing hard. Try to imagine with me, but the reason I really enjoy this song is that it's like a rock version of rap music. It's kinda hard to hear, but listen to her flow throughout the verses. This is ****ing rap music. Her rhyming schemes, combined with her unusual flow, make it classic rap, with a raging rock song in the background. I can't help but scream along to that chorus. "Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you." So blatant, so rude, but so good.

drake - "know yourself"
Man, fucka Hotline Bling. This has been my Drizzy 2015 song since February. I ain't gonna sell out for the mainstream hit! It really is all about that chorus. I WAS. RUNNING. THROUGH THE. SIX. WITHMYWOES. He really is the expert on hooks. Long Live Drake! You know how that **** go.

fka twigs - "in time"
I put this song at #3 in repentance for only putting "Two Weeks" at #12 last year. For shame. Also, I just really love this song. "You've got a goddamn nerve" is such an excellent hook. Even though the song is quite dark instrumentally, there is a message of hope and faith in love. It's about all the desires we have for the one we love. But sometimes they just don't act how we hope they would. That's something that you have to decide is worth fighting through and overcoming.

tame impala - "'cause i'm a man"
Tame Impala had lots of great singles in 2015, but THIS was the best one. I kinda just feel like copy & pasting the lyrics since they're all highlights. I'll try to pick a favorite, though. "My weakness is the source of all my pride." We are such prideful creatures, and we usually try our hardest to hide the weakest, ugliest parts of ourselves. It usually becomes our undoing, too. I love how he feels the need to explain to women that men are literally the WORST. Because we are the worst. Men <<<<<<

grimes - "kill v. maim"
I kinda made this my #1 song on impulse the day after Art Angels was released, but I don't regret it. In a way, this song reminds me a lot of "Scheiße" by Lady Gaga, just in terms of raw energy. It's something in the way the chorus just suddenly appears and kicks you in the fucking face. There's that cute little cheerleader part, a la "Mickey", and then "EH, I DON'T BEHAVE, I DON'T BEHAVE, OH EH" I love how both of my top 2 songs have a similar lyric regarding men. "Cause I'm a man, woman" and "Cause I'm only a man, do what I can". And they come from two different gender perspectives. I don't know if it has any meaning beyond that, but I just thought it was cool.
Soooooo, that's my song countdown. Hope you enjoyed! Stick around for the albums later xoxo
