"America" comes from old German. America was named after Amerigo (Italian) Vespucci by some Germans. Amerigo comes from Heimrich (old German) which means "home ruler." The reason the United States of America stuck with the name was because we wanted independent rule from the British monarchy.
I think you got it mixed up that America was named after a man from Spain, Amerigo Vespucci, who stole credit for Christopher Columbus's discovery.
Not you actually thinking you clocked ha, though
Well that must have been easy considering Columbus thought he was in India the whole time.
America is not a country. People just name it like that. Now united states of America is a country or US/USA but of course everyone's gonna claim otherwise. America is a continent usually divided in 3 sections north, central and South America.
Um, what? The point is they're from NYC so they were taught the American way.

Thank you! The posts in here calling other members ignorant or uneducated
Nobody here is a professional geographer. We're all going by what we were taught. But since we're speaking English, "America" refers to the country. It's really not that hard to understand.
It's different in every country, tbh.
We were thought that there were 5 continents: America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
(6 if you include Antartica.)
