This...I think the fact that Madonna was able to come back and kill it with COADF is what separated her from Janet (as well as the super bowl fiasco), but from the Janet era til All For You I would say she was bigger.
I was do the same for Madonna... nothing she's put out in the last 14 years have been great. Music was a cute album and don't even mention that boring 2005 dance album.
The only reason Madonna is known to the younger generation is because she clings to new artists or artists at their peaks.She did it with Britney, did it with Justin Timberlake, she had LMFAO and Nicki who were at their peaks at her Super Bowl performance and she did it last year with Miley.
Madonna's the biggest female artist, but Janet was a close rival. Definitely a better performer. I'm shocked at people rushing in the boast about NOT knowing Janet. As if your ignorance of one of Pop's queens is something to smile about. She's musical royalty and those flops in your avis and sigs can nor will ever top her.
And Britney stans need to stop, since Britney is basically a clone of Janet.
Madonna was much bigger than Janet after True Blue came out. And ever since.
True Blue was the best selling album in the 1980s by a female artist. True Blue was bigger than Control. Rhythm Nation was a great album, but the reality was in 1990 Madonna was already releasing a Greatest Hits Album - The Immaculate Collection. The Immaculate Collection had a Hot 100 #1 single, Justify My Love and also went Diamond in the US and sold over 30 million copies WW!
RN did have great singles and had massive success. Black Cat, Rhythm Nation, Alright, Escapade. Wonderful songs.
I think it is fair to say Janet is underrated. Her problem has ALWAYS been she was overshadowed by her Brother Michael. Janet was one of the biggest acts in America at the beginning of the 90s.
