Racism WAS a normalized and wide-spread idea of that time though (and it still is today to a much smaller extent). I never said that makes it okay. I'm sure we'd find a huge gleaming flaw in every major historical figure if we sat here and dissected them all. It still doesn't erase the impact they've had on the world.
Being racist in a time when most people were racist is just not that surprising.
If the world's view on race back then was the way that it is today, and Ghandi still held those beliefs, then I could see a reason to be shocked and outraged.
