My son could be walking around in a black shirt and blue pants and could cause problems. It's not always going to go the way we think it will. You say my son would be beaten up even if I taught him to defend himself, I say your son won't get beaten up because there are still good people and kids out there: who's to say we're not both right!? We make decisions only based on what we've experienced, not from what we believe will happen. So, I've experienced someone doing something just like this, getting hounded for it, but was able to stand up for himself and had his friends behind him. I didn't shun him, and we liked him for who he was. That was elementary school.
So, yeah, not everybody is cool in this world, but there are people who are willing to be…

and I don't feel a CHILD is old enough to make those decisions
and know the real consequences of those actions, You're supposed to protect your
child from harm, not send them in harms direction.

And I understand that, but if we saw things in only one direction, we wouldn't get anywhere. If you think ultimately whatever decision your son makes that seems "out of the ordinary" or "socially unacceptable", then you do have the right to step in before they make a bad decision. But if they give that decision to you; if they actually ask "is it okay if I do this?", and you warn him about what could happen and tell him what to do if such a thing should happen and he still wants to, I would be doing an injustice to him by saying no if he has the justice enough to ask me beforehand.
TBH, we never know what triggers are going to set kids off. It shouldn't be all our fault that we let our kids be themselves. And I understand your worries, but at the end of the day, I'm his father and he is my son and I've got my son's back no matter what!
