In elementary school it was required that in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade you do a report on an African American figure every Black History Month.

Last year in APUSH, when my teacher covered the Civil War in the 1800's and the Civil Right Movement in the 1950's he showed us pictures, videos, and movies depicting how gruesome those times were for African Americans.

People trash the American Education system quite a lot, but you can't trash them for not educating us on Civil Rights, slavery, etc.

I went to a private and public school and I only remember a paragraph about The Japanese camps. Thanksgiving, The Trail of tears and some things about Native American culture and Black history all being shoved into Black history month where the same group of people got discussed every year.

But then again I'm in the south so...

I remember when I was a kid we would play indians vs. cowboys and the indians would always be evil In scholl we did learn about the reservations of the natives but for example many things were left out like the Trail of Tears of the Cheerokee. But then again it was all about Italy and Europe, very little was taught bout the world, we spent a whole year learning about the Roman Empire

I always hear people talking about Slavery and the Native Americans like it's a US only thing when the US despite maybe being the most racist slave holding country actually had the smallest amount of slaves I think we even had the least amount of Natives too..

The numerous times we went though it we learned about the slavery the Natives (and subsequently imported Africans) went through, the heroes they had like Enriquillo and Bartolomé de las Casas and how the Europeans totally screw them over (took their lands, their gold, raped/married the women and had children with them, brought in rats and diseases that ended up killing natives, killed native leaders and slaved them to get sugar).

The presentation is very objective (not really super tragic) and the expansiveness of the topic depends on the text book and grade, even it if still has repercussions today because we live next-to and have differences with Haiti.

I remember Columbus Day/Dia de la Raza/Discovery Day always being a huge educational party and mostly presented as "encounter between cultures" and "the discovery of America". "Mirrors per gold" is a national the running joke for stupidity, because Indians exchanged their gold for mirrors and metal cutlery.

It was definitely iniciated by killing of Franz Ferdinand but if mentioned countries didnt have back up from German, Russia with their own intentions etc. there wouldnt be WW1. Germany and Russia had their own ambitions of power and they didnt really care about assassination itself that much. Ofc blaming just Germany for WW1 is wrong.

I spent almost a whole school year hearing about WWII and the Holocaust in history class, and we also read several WWII related books in German class. It is a topic that is constantly brought up, because everyone wants to make sure even children know about this horrible chapter of our past. It is taught in a way to show how wrong and cruel it was, and even though teachers and books probably don't mean to, they end up making you feel guilt for it.

Personally, it had a huge impact on me to the point where it became part of the reason why I lost the desire to identify myself with this country. I felt, and still feel, that just because I was born in this country, I will always have to carry the burden of older generations' crimes and it's unbearable.

They used the conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary but really that was not the sole reason for the first world war to break out.
