In elementary school it was required that in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade you do a report on an African American figure every Black History Month.
Last year in APUSH, when my teacher covered the Civil War in the 1800's and the Civil Right Movement in the 1950's he showed us pictures, videos, and movies depicting how gruesome those times were for African Americans.
People trash the American Education system quite a lot, but you can't trash them for not educating us on Civil Rights, slavery, etc.
