For example, Pon de Replay which was released in a time when dancehall and island infused music was very popular (Sean Paul, Baby Boy, Kevin Lyttle, etc). Take a Bow is another example coming after the wave of Irreplaceble's success and the imitations that followed. There is also Only Girl in the World with its clear dancepop stylings and Stay that was obviously inspired by the ballads of Adele.

Pon de replay was released in 2005 not 2003, there was no dancehall infused pop song ruling the charts then are we forgetting the monster that was we belong together?
SLY by itself was the only ballad to top the charts, 3 yrs after take a bow did it. Rihanna has had hit ballads before.
And Rihanna already did dancepop in 2006 with S.O.S way before only girl happened.
