There's an overwhelming sense with all of Madonna's music in the past decade that she's regressed in maturity—both artistically and as a person—since her peak, which makes it sort of depressing even when it's good.
We know that's not true though - she's still as political and intelligent as she ever was, but she's not letting that inform her work like she used to. She's struggling with how to approach ageing in a pop career (which is tragic, because she was the textbook example of how to handle it perfectly until Confessions...) and it's affecting her music and the way she presents herself.
I've never been on the "she should make another Ray of Light" bandwagon because nobody can just crap out an album like that - she can't recreate the events/feelings that made her write stuff like "Mer Girl", obviously - but... IDK. She could at least try.
