I just finished reading Memoirs of a Geisha and I'm kinda conflicted because it's beautifully written but it was written by a white American man who made Sayuri the main character embody practically every negative Japanese stereotype in existence.
and apparently the geisha who's life he based the book on was harassed afterwards since the geisha community have a strict code of silence. The movie got terrible reviews but not surprising since the source material wasn't great to begin with
