1989 Song
[Spoken]
If I could turn back time
I'd go to nineteen... eighty... nine
Tonight let's dress up
And we can be the new romantics
Shake off this bad blood
Baby there's magic in the music
Makes me wanna dance
Under the city lights
So I can leave the past behind
But then he walks in
Just like he's James Dean on a mission
After everythin'
I'm not sure if I can forgive him
But I catch a glance
Of those flashing green eyes
And the emotions start to fly
And I feel just like
I'm back in eighty nine
Cause I swear that I
Have loved you all my life
And I feel just like
This is our chance to shine
Cause I swear that I
Won't let you go this time
No I won't let you go this time
We survived the storm
Even after all of my mistakes
I'm a rose with thorns
But you say you like me that way
It's our second chance
We can get this love right
Yeah you just have to stay this time
Only in my dreams
Have we rekindled that fragile flame
Then you kiss my cheek
And I know nothing will be the same
I wish you would dance
With me all through the night
And we can leave the past behind
And I feel just like
I'm back in eighty nine
Cause I swear that I
Have loved you all my life
And I feel just like
This is our chance to shine
Cause I swear that I
Won't let you go this time
And it's just like a prayer
When you're here with me
I feel it in the air
And in your heartbeat
Love had drowned in despair
Lost under the sea
I had no hope to spare
Til you came back to me
I take a Polaroid
In my mind
To make this moment last
My whole life
Cause I just can't believe
You're still in love with me
[Pause]
And I feel just like
I'm back in eighty nine
Cause I swear that I
Have loved you all my life
And I feel just like
This is our chance to shine
Cause I swear that I
Won't let you go this time
And I feel just like
I'm back in eighty nine
Cause I swear that I
Have loved you all my life
And I feel just like
This is our chance to shine
Cause I swear that I
Won't let you go this time
And I feel just like
I'm back in eighty nine
Explaining 1989
I started out intending to write a party song revolving around the hook "Party like it's 1989!" (because you know Taylor would do it). I had a New Romantics reference planned, because the new romantics fashion trend was popular in the late 80s, and I wanted the song to include a few references to pop culture circa 1989.
Then I came up with a line about James Dean, and decided to eschew the basic bop in favor of a song that fit the album's focus on an on/off relationship. And so, "1989" starts out as a song about going out to get over an ex-man, but some tension is introduced when said ex shows up.
Key words and phrases from 1989 pop up in "1989," tying the song and album together. For example, "Green eyes" appear here, as well as in Wonderland and I Know Places. Considering so many songs on 1989 feature similar imagery, it seemed appropriate to continue using this imagery in my song.
