I haven't seen an episode of the anime since some time in the Best Wishes series, but am I reading this right that they totally screwed up Serena's character and made her a damn "Pokemon Performer" instead of the competitive rival she is in the games? Like, I'm sorry, but not every damn girl who travels with Ash anymore has to be into coordinating and whatever "Princess Showcases" are, and Iris (as much as I don't care for her) proved that.

Serena is amazing though (and far more tolerable than Iris).
I liked Iris. She wanted to do more than just sit around and do contests. Her & Misty >>>>
Admittedly, Iris had aspirations that were more original than most of the girls (though May, Dawn, [and Serena] weren't just slacking off either); however, she was very annoying, and that made it hard to root for her. Her and Cilan were Ash's worst travel companions, by far.
Serena was cute at first and I liked what they did where she didn't have a set goal and was winging it, I thought it made her more interesting to watch.....
BUT THEN. She turned into a carpet muncher and served Kirlia evolving into Gallade instead of Graceful Gardevoir and decided she wanted to be a "Pokemon Performer"
I'm here for a primal Ho-oh, the good sis was done so wrong, not even getting her own film.
All the teasing in the anime for absolutely nothing
I don't know if I like that idea tho. Lugia and Ho-oh won't be the hypothetical focus of main-series games for at least a decade if they ever even return to Johto at all, and Mega Evolution will have worn down its novelty factor completely by then. It'll probably slowly fade out after the next games and be just a side-thing by the end of the next generation.
Mega Evolution is a lasting thing that is here to stay. The amount of marketing that comes with it is far to great to pass up as a gimmick ORAS, her entire promotional campaign was held up by new mega evolution reveals. Its the only part of the franchise that can easily please competitive and casual players.
(and far more tolerable than Iris).
