Well, GF literally made it's niche to be the reversal pokemon, (it even has a signature move to flip stats), which is why it got Contrary.

Malamar has Contrary (which flips stat changes) because the pokemon itself is flipped from it's pre-evolved form. That alone is legendary. I doubt they'd give it substandard stats and moves with all the new Mega Evolutions the new Pokemon will be competing with.
