The whole point was kinda the insignificance of humanity in the grand scheme of things and to depict the shellshock that comes from realizing how powerless we are to resist/overcome the forces of nature and the level of hubris entailed by our implicit belief in the contrary.

Idk it is kinda hard to subvert expectation by reducing the human protagonists to the role of mere spectators to all the action without sacrificing their development into compelling characters.
