Yeah, using the right pronouns was the most difficult part for me, it was like I either offended him by referring to him as a man or was being too pushy by calling him a woman before his transition was even done. However, it seemed, with my friend at least, that sticking with the masculine pronouns until the transition was well underway was the best decision. Hopefully your friend will give you subtle hints about when she's ready to start being referred to as a man.
As confusing as it is for us, it's even more confusing for them; so, all we really can do is be supportive every step of the way. For some people transitioning can be a really scary time and they'll often jump away from the idea and then back onto it multiple times. Just never press the issue and always be as understanding as you can!
