Synopsis
"Heartbeats" was the first single from The Knife's 2003 sophomore effort, Deep Cuts. The song has seen critical acclaim since it's release, but apparently it's not good enough for ATRL. "Heartbeats" is an electronic track with emotive lyrics, and a stunning production that is ahead of it's time. It's almost hypnotic and it somehow manages to instil nostalgia for a time period that I can't really put my finger on, all I know is I want to be there. It is summery, soothing, but it also packs in a punch with rather dark lyrics. The song was listed at #15 on Pitchfork Media's top 500 songs of the 2000s and at #87 on Rolling Stone's top 100 songs of the 2000s. It had nice chart success for The Knife, with peaks including 26 in Sweden and 119 in the UK. José González, whoever that is, did a cover of the song and it saw even more chart success, including a number 9 peak in the UK. The Knife is now eliminated from the competition.
Standout Lines
"And you, you knew the hand of the Devil / And you, kept us awake with wolves' teeth / Sharing different heartbeats in one night"
"To call for hands from above, to lean on / Wouldn't be good enough for me, no"
