I was watching the movie, and my friend beside me is like "that was good." And I'm like gurrl, the movie is still going on! Well next thing I know the lights are back on, the credits are playing, everyone's standing up, and I'm still in my seat waiting for something else to happen.

Exactly one month before it was set to open last October, Wanderlust was bumped back to its current Feb. 24 release date. That late move, combined with the fewest theaters for a Judd Apatow production in over a decade, seems to indicate that distributor Universal Pictures has had a tough time coming up with the right strategy for the movie. Star Paul Rudd and director David Wain's last collaboration, Role Models, opened to $19.2 million in November 2008, and one would think adding Jennifer Aniston for Wanderlust would only help matters. Unfortunately, while Aniston is coming off of two $100 million movies, she's also recently starred in duds like The Switch and Love Happens, which debuted to $8.4 million and $8.1 million, respectively. Based on current tracking, Universal is expecting an opening of less than $10 million. Very disappointing numbers for Jennifer Aniston.

Just got the 1st box office update of the day at work:

Here’s the first box office update of the day. GOOD DEEDS has gotten off to a good start and currently has a solid location average of approximately $525, making it a very close second in the marketplace (behind ACT OF VALOR). Here are some of the more recent non-Easter comps at the same hour, followed by how they finished the day and weekend:

FOR COLORED GIRLS: $932 / $7.4m / $19.5m
I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF: $636 / $8.6m / $23.4m
WHY DID I GET MARRIED?: $760 / $7.4m / $21.4m
FAMILY THAT PREYS: $510 / $6.2m / $17.4m

ACT OF VALOR is pretty close to us in total dollars, and has an average of about $425. The growth has been slow on that one though- which indicates that much of their business could be pre-sale- but it is an R-rated action film so there is the chance that it will take off tonight.

GONE is currently at about $70, which stacks up to its comps like this:

RED RIDING HOOD: $157 / $5m / $14m
THE ROOMMATE: $93 / $6.4m / $15m
STEPFATHER: $84 / $4.4m / $11.6m
JENNIFER’S BODY: $81 / $2.8m / $6.9m
CASE 39: $59 / $1.8m / $5.4m

The fourth opener of the day, WANDERLUST, is at around $120. They’re right in line with comps like 50/50 and HOW DO YOU KNOW, both of which finished in the $7-9 million area for the weekend.

As for some of the holdovers, week 3 of JOURNEY 2 is third in the market but holding in well (there are some kids out of school today), while SAFE HOUSE is fourth overall in their third weekend.

Keep in mind these are VERY early and rough, but still, they tend to be fairly accurate. $7-9M
