It's time to start on my Top 100 Singles of 2013! But before that, for today I will give you the 10 songs that almost made it.
TOP 10 BUBBLING UNDER
|
#10 |
Tonight I'm Getting Over You
Carly Rae Jepsen
Peak: 9
Weeks on chart: 15
This is probably Carly's best song off Kiss and honestly it did have the potential to smash, yet it didn't, despite it getting a really cool remix with Nicki Minaj. I guess she's pretty much done right now. |
|
#9 |
Gold
Britt Nicole
Peak: 14
Weeks on chart: 7
This is just a really catchy song. I didn't realise she was actually a Christian singer, especially with that cool rap segment in the bridge. However I don't think I would wanna check her music out more, so this is probably the last time I'll see her. |
|
#8 |
We Remain
Christina Aguilera
Peak: 10
Weeks on chart: 7 (still charting)
This is Christina's best song in so long to be honest, probably since her Back to Basics era. It's so much more mature and the arena pop sound really works well with her booming voice. It gives her a much bigger sense of credibility too. I hope she takes this route more in her next album. Maybe we're all kinda tired of dirrty Xtina. This sound might just win the GP back. |
|
#7 |
Hothouse
78violet
Peak: 14
Weeks on chart: 12
These 2 sisters disappeared for 6 years, went off into acting and even went independent. This year they finally returned with a new Lana Del Rey-esque indie song, totally different from their past song. Sadly they've failed to create enough fanfare around their return (the video only has over 200,000 views after 5 months), but I guess that's what they get when they don't have a label. |
|
#6 |
Next to Me
Emeli Sande
Peak: 10
Weeks on chart: 11
Mmm this song is kinda cool I guess. I picked it up because radio started playing this this year, despite it smashing last year in the UK. I don't really have much to comment about this song. |
|
#5 |
People Like Us
Kelly Clarkson
Peak: 23
Weeks on chart: 9
The second single of her Greatest Hits album. Though it's better than the really underwhelming Catch My Breath, it still falls short of usual Kelly greatness. The sound is a little too generic in my opinion. |
|
#4 |
Sail
AWOLNATION
Peak: 10
Weeks on chart: 10
I sort of knew this song since last year, but I didn't really bothered about it other than watching it's strange parody that has more views than the official video, and the hysterically hilarious Cat Jump Fail video. I only really caught onto it when it finally got released to mainstream radio in the US (which is my main source of music). |
|
#3 |
Millionaires
The Script
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 8
The 4th single off the album which title was stolen from Beyonce. I really liked the chorus of this song. It's really uplifting. |
|
#2 |
True Love (feat. Lily Rose Cooper)
P!nk
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 12
I don't know if Lily wants to be called Allen or Rose Cooper now??? Besides that, this song is cute and the video is also really cute, despite everyone here dragging it to the pits. |
|
#1 |
Carry On
fun.
Peak: 4
Weeks on chart: 17
And there you have it, the song that almost made it into the top 100. Sadly this song failed to match up to Some Nights and We Are Young in terms of success and quality, yet it's still a pretty darn good song. |
AND THAT'S MY 10 BUBBLING UNDER SONGS WHICH ALMOST MADE IT TO THE CHARTS. FOR THE TOP 100 SINGLES, I WILL PROBABLY START ON MONDAY AS I'M UNAVAILABLE TOMORROW. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING AND COMMENTING, AND WE SHALL MOVE INTO THE CHARTS PROPER SOON.
|
#100 |
Breezeblocks
Alt-J
Peak: 13
Weeks on chart: 11
Kicking off the top 100 is Alt-J with their amazingly cool song, Breezeblocks. Though I haven't figured out what this song means, it's still a great song. The music video is fantastic, I highly recommend watching that.
|
|
#99 |
Backseat Serenade
All Time Low
Peak: 12
Weeks on chart: 12
This is the first of two entries All Time Low has on this chart. This song reminds me a lot of Dirty Work, especially the synths. But by the chorus it definitely shakes off the glossiness and poppiness of Dirty Work. And let's not forget Cassadee Pope's voice on it!
|
|
#98 |
Changing of the Seasons
Two Door Cinema Club
Peak: 4
Weeks on chart: 9
What do you get when you mix indie pop-rockers Two Door Cinema Club and electronic dance DJ Madeon together? This insanely catchy, fist pumping track. This is probably one of my favourite songs from them, along with stuff like Something Good Can Work.
|
|
#97 |
Berzerk
Eminem
Peak: 9
Weeks on chart: 8
Eminem's comeback single may not be fully suited to my mainstream pop oriented taste, but I applaud it for having the authentic Eminem sound and an oldschool hip-hop throwback.
|
|
#96 |
Baby I
Ariana Grande
Peak: 9
Weeks on chart: 12
This is a rather mediocre Ariana track, it basically sounds like The Way and is nothing special by itself. Yet, it's still a cute bop. It's success as a single was tragic though.

Supersoaker
Kings of Leon
Peak: 19
Weeks on chart: 9
2012: Distance (feat. Jason Mraz) - Christina Perri
Techincally, I find the song not much different from their previous work, but their sound always drives me back to them. The nostalgic guitar sounds just makes their music so pleasurable.
|
|
#94 |
The Wire
Haim
Peak: 5
Weeks on chart: 8 (still charting)
2012: Tongue Tied - Grouplove
I only found out about them a few months ago but their music is just beyond amazing. This song is no exception, and it has a pretty hilarious video accompanying it. Furthermore, the idea of 3 sisters in a band, it's just sexy.
|
|
#93 |
Holding on to You
twenty | one | pilots
Peak: 4
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: When She Was Mine - Lawson
This song is just the perfect example of their unique and amazing mash of hip-hop, rock, indie etc. It's just such a glorious blend that is so interesting to listen to.
|
|
#92 |
Scream & Shout (feat. Britney Spears)
will.i.am
Peak: 10
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: Kiss You Inside Out - Hedley
Let's face it. The only reason I (and ya'll) listen to this is for Britney's parts. No matter how freaking mediocre and lame her part was in the song, we still listen to it for that fact. If you listen to this song for other reasons I'm judging you.
|
|
#91 |
King & Lionheart
Of Monsters and Men
Peak: 20
Weeks on chart: 8
2012: Tonight Is The Night - Outasight
Though this is probably my least favourite single off their album, it's still a pretty darn good song. Their songs always sound larger than life, set in some alternate universe just like how their music videos are like. Their videos, meshed with the songs, just takes you to another world.

C'mon Let Me Ride (feat. Eminem)
Skylar Grey
Peak: 12
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Kiss Me Slowly - Parachute
Skylar teased us in 2010/2011 which Dance Without You and Invisible for her album. So after about 2 years, she gave us this, which are so different from those 2 songs. I'm quite most of us thought 'wtf' when they heard this song. It was just, not usual Skylar stuff. But eventually the catchiness and cheekiness caught on and I liked the song. The video was pretty wacky too. And who knew Skylar could sell sex?
|
|
#89 |
Constant Conversations
Passion Pit
Peak: 11
Weeks on chart: 14
2012: The Vision of Love - Kris Allen
Speaking of sex, this is probably the sexiest sounding song I've ever heard, other than those R&B stuff. The beat is slow and trippy, while his vocals are pitched so high it'll probably cause any girl to squeal. The video is yet another masterpiece from Passion Pit. It's like a classy party filled with so much sexual tension that it'll choke anyone. And then there's Analeigh Tipton (aka the girl in Crazy, Stupid, Love who took nudes of herself) and she's just so hot. And then that fleeting lesbian moment at the end. Hottest video ever without any sexual motions.
|
|
#88 |
Home
Phillip Phillips
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 11
2012: Good Girl - Carrie Underwood
After writing an essay for the previous song, I have nothing to say for this. I kinda caught onto this song a little late, hence it charting this year. But yeah, it's definitely the best American Idol coronation song ever.
|
|
#87 |
Burn
Ellie Goulding
Peak: 13
Weeks on chart: 10
2012: Turn Me On (feat. Nicki Minaj) - David Guetta
It seems like ATRL really really likes this song a lot. For me, it's a really really basic and generic song from Ellie. The chorus where she just keeps repeating 'burn' is such a turn off. I get that it's catchy, but that's it. It doesn't do Ellie any justice. Well, at least I'm glad it's smashing now, even though Anything Could Happen should've been the one that smashed (I am still not over that).
|
|
#86 |
The One That Got Away
The Civil Wars
Peak: 5
Weeks on chart: 7
2012: Dance Again (feat. Pitbull) - Jennifer Lopezt
A really dark and somber song which I guess fits their situation. This song isn't anywhere near the best in the album, but it really fits their hiatus, even more if you choose to read the lyrics beyond the literal love context.

Unbelievers
Vampire Weekend
Peak: 21
Weeks on chart: 8
2012: Try - P!nk
This was the first new Vampire Weekend song we've heard since Contra I believe? I must admit this song isn't impressive, but a good song nonetheless.
|
|
#79 |
I Need Your Love (feat. Ellie Goulding)
Calvin Harris
Peak: 9
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: So Good - B.o.B
Gosh I think I really do drag my songs a lot, cuz I'm about to sort of drag this song. Compared to other Calvin productions this era, this is really weak. But I think what makes me like this song is Ellie's appearance in it. And the video gets me so confused, did they actually date? Or is that all just for fun (which is weird cuz isn't it weird for 2 artists to be smooching and doing stuff like that for fun?).
|
|
#78 |
Counting Stars
OneRepublic
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 11
2012: The Fighter (feat. Ryan Tedder) - Gym Class Heroes
What a coincidence, this year OneRepublic takes this position while Ryan Tedder was featured on a song that took this position last year. Well I'm glad this song is smashing so hard right now. Why is it when their era seems like it's gonna die without any hits, out comes a single that unexpectedly becomes one?
|
|
#77 |
Slow Down
Selena Gomez
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 14
2012: Settle Down - No Doubt
Well, it's a really catchy, perfectly crafted pop song production-wise, and that's about it. I just use it for the bops.
|
|
#76 |
Harlem
New Politics
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 8
2012: Always Summer - Yellowcard
Well I don't really know much about these guys, but this is such an insanely catchy song that has nothing to do with the annoying mess that went viral earlier this year. I get annoyed by the blonde hair guy though, he's so shaggy.

Treasure
Bruno Mars
Peak: 4
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: You Da One - Rihanna
Another one of those 80's-retro bops from Bruno. Though I don't really enjoy the video, I appreciate the fact that it's really trying to match an 80's video with it's low quality, over-the-topness and the amount of cheese on it. I just hope he stops it for the next album. Once or twice is enough, or else he might as well just go be a Michael Jackson tribute act.

Little Talks
Of Monsters and Men
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 17
2012: Fly (feat. Rihanna) - Nicki Minaj
The second and last entry for Of Monsters and Men. Sometimes I get a little sick of the song mainly cos of the pause in the middle of the song which makes me think the song ended but actually no we're not even halfway there idk that's probably just me. I'm glad this was a success in the US.
|
|
#68 |
Dust to Dust
The Civil Wars
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 10
2012: Want U Back - Cher Lloyd
I'm sure many of us we're shocked to see these two in a video together, but only to be let down by the fact that this was filmed 2 years ago. It makes me wonder though, if they're not even on speaking terms, who decides to release these singles and videos?
|

Gone, Gone, Gone
Phillip Phillips
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: Take Care (feat. Rihanna) - Drake
I'm usually not attracted to folk music, but damn Phillips makes it so catchy and good.
|
|
#66 |
Don't You Worry Child (feat. Chris Martin)
Swedish House Mafia
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: Vegas Girl - Conor Maynard
At first I didn't really like this song. I think it was the guy's voice that really turned me off. But then one day I heard the song being blasted from some big speakers and damn, it made it sound so good. The rave portion is just so euphoric.

Miss Jackson (feat. Lolo)
Panic! at the Disco
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) - Gotye
B-B-B-Be careful making wishes in the dark, darkPanic!'s first single (or should I just say Brendon Urie's solo project) is pretty much the same as FOB's My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark. Sometimes when one song is playing I think it's the other song. And not to mention that Brendon's voice is really similar to Patrick's. Oh well, despite all these, it's still a really nice and catchy song.
|
|
#54 |
#Beautiful (feat. Miguel)
Mariah Carey
Peak: 3
Weeks on chart: 14
2012: A Thousand Years - Christina Perri
Thank god some miracle happened between Triumphant's and this song's release, cos this song is like perfectly Mariah. It sounds like a classic. One problem that is similar to Triumphant is that, she doesn't give herself enough presence in the song. Though for this song it's much better, but not enough. Anyway, this is just the perfect Mariah comeback.

Safe and Sound
Capital Cities
Peak: 9
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Sexy and I Know It - LMFAO
Of course I had to jump onto the bandwagon when this song was smashing. To be honest, when you look at these guys, you'd probably think they're some hard rock band, but nope, instead they make such pop perfection (based on this song, cos I've never listened to their other material).
|
|
#52 |
Final Warning
Skylar Grey
Peak: 7
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Primadonna - Marina and the Diamonds
I just love me some dark Skylar songs, after the strangely upbeat and light C'mon Let Me Ride. I find the lyrical content really interesting, though unsettling for some. The video is amazing, it takes a new twist on the song and kinda gives it a new meaning when you look at it from a different perspective.

If I Lose Myself
OneRepublic
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Starships - Nicki Minaj
When this came out I was like woah, this is so straight out pop. Have they sold out? Who cares. Cos this song is flawless. I don't care if they're following the EDM trend, they made the song rightfully their own and it really sets itself apart from other such songs. I'm a little sad this didn't smash though, cos it'll definitely present them in a new light.

Carried Away
Passion Pit
Peak: 12
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Princess of China (feat. Rihanna) - Coldplay
The last of three entries by Passion Pit. The song is cool, but the video is just totally awesome. Like what I read somewhere, it's basically 500 Days of Summer (the good parts only though) in over 3 minutes.
|
|
#49 |
Alone Together
Fall Out Boy
Peak: 18
Weeks on chart: 12
2012: Diamonds - Rihanna
Probably the most poppy song by FOB, but it's still one hell of a bop. used to misread the lyrics "I'm on deck yeah I'm up next" as "I'm a dick and I'm a mess". I prefer my version a lot more.
|
|
#48 |
Goodbye, Goodbye
Tegan and Sara
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 11 (still charting)
2012: Don't Stop (Colors on the Wall) - Foster the People
The first of three Tegan and Sara entries. People like to say this is an inferior version of Closer. Well, at first listen I think I liked this more than Closer. But never did I think this would be a single though.
|
|
#47 |
Crazy Kids
Ke$ha
Peak: 7
Weeks on chart: 11
2012: Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch) - Calvin Harris
The best single off Warrior, only to be ruined by a remix with a certain abomination. I remember at first listen I was kinda underwhelmed by this song, especially with everyone all praising it. Like, I keep anticipating some epic breakdown after each chorus cos the chorus has this rising melody. But soon I appreciated that fact and really really loved this song.
|
|

22
Taylor Swift
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Marry the Night - Lady Gaga
The Lord's worst single ever. Like seriously bitch what made you think it's okay to release 3 Max Basic Martin in a row to pop? Even though this song is total crap, if you really wanted it as a single, could you not wait till summer and not during spring? This song totally derailed Red from being a huge era and now she's back to square one where she was after the Speak Now era.

House of Gold
twenty | one | pilots
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 8 (still charting)
2012: Set Fire to the Rain - Adele
The last twenty | one | pilots entry. It's just awesome that this song is just the ukuleles and the guy's voice. It sounds almost like a nursery rhyme, as the verses are mostly repeated. Right at the bridge, where he screams a few words, just tops this song off perfectly.
|
|
#44 |
Made In the USA
Demi Lovato
Peak: 8
Weeks on chart: 11
2012: Begin Again - Taylor Swift
At first when I saw the song title, I thought this was gonna be some patriotic song, like how she's an all American girl or something. But no it's a love song and I find it weird to boast about your relationship being made in the US. If you are American, most likely your relationship takes place in the US right? Other than that, it's a really good and catchy song and I really like the banjos in the bridge. It really brings the "American" feel to it.
|
|
#43 |
The Phoenix
Fall Out Boy
Peak: 5
Weeks on chart: 10
2012: Your Body - Christina Aguilera
An epic song. The strings in the song makes it so grand and threatening.
|
|
#42 |
The Mother We Share
CHVRCHES
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 10 (still charting)
2012: Good Time (feat. Carly Rae Jepsen) - Owl City
I found out about CHVRCHES a couple of months ago and I love them. I just really like the synths and stuff in the song.
|
|
#41 |
Here's To Never Growing Up
Avril Lavigne
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 13
2012: Brokenhearted - Karmin
Let's be honest, I was disappointed by this song when it came out. So much autotune, such a basic melody, and it's nothing new from Avril. But it's just so catchy.

Roar
Katy Perry
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 16
2012: Wide Awake - Katy Perry
Kicking off the top 20 is BraveRoar! Ok I'm sorry, but it's mandatory that a Roar/Brave joke has to be made right? Ok anyway when this came out, I was blown away. It stepped away from Katy's usual glossy dance-pop songs and instead goes for something more organic (though the song is still generic in a sense). The lyrics are cheesy, but the way each chorus comes in like a wrecking ball, it makes up for the empowerment the lyrics fail to bring.
|
|
#19 |
Everything Has Changed (feat. Ed Sheeran)
Taylor Swift
Peak: 3
Weeks on chart: 14
2012: National Anthem - Lana Del Rey
Tons of people hate this song, especially many of The Lord's Disciples. Drag me or whatever, but this is one of the best songs from Red. It's just such a sweet song and the chorus is so catchy, and Ed really adds to the song as he harmonizes with Taylor. But the remix could go and die though.
|
|
#18 |
Applause
Lady Gaga
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 15 (still charting)
2012: Call It What You Want - Foster the People
I remember when I first heard the teaser I was like wtf, this is gonna be so horrible. Then when the song came out, I was still like wtf. The verses are uhm okay... Then the pre-chorus aka the teaser portions which are just the worst. But then chorus hits and I was like YES THIS IS AMAZING. Seriously that chorus saves the whole song. The verse lyrics are still wtf though. The video is good too, it's not convoluted and it's just pure fun (though I'm sure if you dig deep enough you can make a story out of it).
|
|
#17 |
Royals
Lorde
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 14
2012: Where Have You Been - Rihanna
Ahh Lorde. I don't really care about the lyrics to be honest, cos I wish I could live like a royal. But damn this song is so so catchy.
|
|
#16 |
Clarity (feat. Foxes)
Zedd
Peak: 6
Weeks on chart: 16
2012: Blow Me (One Last Kiss) - P!nk
I like the way this is like a sort of EDM ballad, cos Foxes' vocals are just soaring. And then the breakdown comes and it almost feels euphoric. It's cool.

Radioactive
Imagine Dragons
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 29
2012: Lights - Ellie Goulding
After hearing It's Time, I thought Imagine Dragons were just gonna be yet another (good) indie band, but then I heard this track and was like wtf this is insane. The dubstep and electronic sounds just blew me away. It made me listen to their whole album (which is the 4th best album of 2012 for me) and made me realise how diverse and amazing their sound is. I'm glad this song smashed like crazy after It's Time made quite a small impact.
|
|
#9 |
Closer
Tegan and Sara
Peak: 16
Weeks on chart: 9
2012: Born to Die - Lana Del Rey
Now you must be wondering, how this song is in the top 10 when it peaked at a mere #16? Well when I first heard it I thought uhm it's an okay song. Hence it charted low and left the charts quickly. Then I listened to the album and found it not bad, so I listened to the song more. Then Taylor performed it with them on her tour, which made me listen to it even more. And then Anna (nineteen) introduced me to more T&S music, which made me like their music even more and made me listen to this song even more. So this song got quite a lot of recurrent plays.
|
|
#8 |
Now
Paramore
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 20
2012: Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
After so long, I was so so desperate for new Paramore music. So I gobbled this song up even though it's a really weird Paramore song. And the chorus is somewhat a little lacklustre as Hayley keeps repeating the same line over and over. But it's still a really good song, though it's one of my least favourite songs off the album. The video is the best of the whole era (so far), though the ending was a little anti-climatic and Hayley looked terrifying.
|
|
#7 |
The Way (feat. Mac Miller)
Ariana Grande
Peak: 2
Weeks on chart: 17
2012: We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monae) - fun.
I didn't know who this Ariana Grande was before this song, but when I saw it go #1 on iTunes, I decided to listen to it. And for some reason, I fell in love with this song immediately. It could be her great Mariah vocals, the throwback sound, the catchiness, that makes this song just so irresistible. Oh and I'm quite a sucker for high notes. The video though, the kiss though, was actually strangely hot yet disgusting. I don't know how in the world it was hot, but it was disgusting cos Mac Miller is disgusting.
|
|
#6 |
Can't Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton)
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 18
2012: Both of Us (feat. Taylor Swift) - B.o.B
This song is just hypnotically catchy from the first second to the last. The way the beat just keeps driving and driving and the way Mack keeps spitting his lines so convincingly. And then the usage of pianos and trumpets are really interesting and cool.

Brave
Sara Bareilles
Peak: 5
Weeks on chart: 24
2012: Houdini - Foster the People
THE ORIGINAL kicking off the top 5! Okay anyway, when this came out I was quite taken by surprise, cos it's not a usual Sara sound. But it's so catchy anyway. And similar to Closer, this song got quite a lot of reccurent plays. Firstly, after she played this with Taylor on the Red Tour, when the album was released and then when Roar "copied" it. Evidently it's the superior one.

I Want Crazy
Hunter Hayes
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 22
2012: Let's Go (feat. Ne-Yo) - Calvin Harris
This song is probably gonna be the one that ruins all of ya'll 5/5 (if that even happens) cos Hunter is pretty unknown here, especially this song. This song is just amazing, it really makes you feel like as if you wanna fall into some crazy love. The bridge and the outro verses are just the best things.

We Can't Stop
Miley Cyrus
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 24
2012: We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris) - Rihanna
The biggest guilty pleasure of mine of all time. Some of ya'll might be disgusted by this song being so high, but I don't really care, cos it just can't get out of my mind. I was expecting Miley to return with some extremely ratchet song, but this is midtempo and kinda relaxed. The beats in the song, the electronic riffs make this song go hard. This is also my longest running no.1 for 2013 with 9 weeks on top.

I Knew You Were Trouble
Taylor Swift
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 24
2012: Safe & Sound (feat. The Civil Wars) - Taylor Swift
When there were rumours back before Red was released that Taylor had a dubstep track, I was like wtf that is obviously fake Taylor can't do dubstep it will sound horrible she'll lose all her fans. And then it came out, and everyone's expectations of Taylor were just demolished. Who in a million years (before Red's release) would think that she could do this, and with such quality? This is the kind of pop I want her to venture in if she decides to do so (unlike 22 and WANEGBT).

Still Into You
Paramore
Peak: 1
Weeks on chart: 27
2012: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift
This song is just all kinds of amazing. Though it's more pop than their usual material, the Paramore trademark is still very much intact. The song is so much fun, yet it's still personal and emotional as usual. There are a lot less guitars in this, yet it still drives the message of the song across hard. It's just so amazing. It's so amazing to hear Paramore with so much joyful energy. And Hayley's vocals are beyond amazing as usual. I don't even think my description justifies this song I'm just listening to this again and omg I just feel so fluttery.
