Exactly!
Oh and Mig123, I credit you for single-handedly making me despise Shakira's existence. I hate the bitch. Her goat-like singing voice makes me want to ring the neighboring person's neck whenever she's on the radio. I want to burn the 3 Shakira albums I own. Why did I ever buy that **** is beyond me. That's about it.

I don't think you even read my post.
I said that my taste is, in fact, DIFFERENT than many other people's taste, on here or in the US. I've grown to accept it and, actually, thrive in it. I said that some people DO like the song and there's nothing I can do to change that.
But I have the right to say if a song sucks or not, whether it be "S.O.S.", "Hips Don't Lie" or even *gasp* "Promiscuous"!. It's an opinion.

Ummm, Shakira fans aren't stupid. Practically every fan knows that the sole purpose of the song, the reason it was created, was to be catchy, commercial, and to get on the radio to promote Shakira and her music and album. Nobody was saying it was some magnificent musical masterpiece. Many fans think it's her worst song ever, other fans may think it's a pretty good song, while the casual listener (or the average radio audience) may think it's her best song ever.
Fans just want Shakira to see success, whether it's with "Hips Don't Lie" or any other song she releases. Just because fans wish a song to be a commercial success it doesn't mean that they are claiming the song to be some masterpiece.

Exactly. You said it perfectly. Everyone is going to have different tastes. Most people on this board haven't learned to respect that. I understand that you might have a favorite artist...hey everyone does, but plz don't overdo it.
LMAO, Mazen.

You never said that Shakira fans were stupid, but it was implied in your post when you said "Songs could be HUGE and they can still suck.". It's like, no duh. First off, fans never put the song on a pedestal as the musical masterpiece of the century. Don't you think we're well aware that just because a song is a hit it doesn't mean the song is good. I repeat, "HDL" is arguably Shakira's worst song ever according to fans, BUT it's one of her best singles ever.
Personally I would rather have a song like "Dreams For Plans" as a single, IF it could be a definite hit. But I know that it's not commercial enough, it's not catchy enough, but I think it's a brilliant song and much better than "Hips Don't Lie". There are many songs on Shakira's album that are better than "HDL" (all of them ), unfortunately "HDL" is the most commercial and the one with the greatest radio potential. I'm sure if Shakira could release her best songs and have them to be guaranteed hits, she would do it. Unfortunately radio doesn't work like that, it's about releasing commercial and catchy songs with obvious hooks, not neccesarily about releasing the best qualilty music. Most of Shakira's best songs could NEVER be released as singles.
Fans just want Shakira to have success in America, whether it's with "HDL" or some other song. We're not putting "HDL" on a pedestal for its music, we just want it to be successful so that the rest of the songs and music on the album will get noticed.

i dont think nobody over did it.....this discussion started because someone said this.....
"I hope that doesn't happen. You guys aremaking "HDL" out as the best song of the century and we all know it isn't."
I do NOT think is the best song of the century but that dosent stop it from being sucessfull............. Just like mariah had the most sucessfull song last year... and that aint the best song of the century neather starting with the lyrics
but like always my best wishes to shakira

Okay, the only problem with your post is that I generally am friends with Shakira fans and I am a fan of Shakira as well, so i'd be totally remiss if I "implied" that they are stupid. I was generally refering to the fanatics who treat everything Shakira does as the greatest thing in the world and don't think for themselves, they just act like little drones. Not you, of course, but there are some.
And adding on to what I said above, I don't know how many of you know this, but I am a huge fan of Shakira's spanish work. Ojos Asi is a classic. I just don't like most of Shakira's english music, though "Poem To A Horse" is pretty damn good. I've said in AIM chats that I don't expect much from Shakira anyway, and that's because her english music is mostly crap. But when she releases spanish tracks, I take notice.

You make some good points, but I think the problem is being mis-read. There are just some posters that are nudging others the wrong way by overexaggerating the success of "Hips Don't Lie." That's really all. That would cover why Mazen was posting a "Shakira owns all picture earlier."

"Ojos Asi" also happens to be her 2nd worst performing song ever on the Billboard Latin Tracks Chart (peak at #22).
I think her English music is very good. It may not be as great as her Spanish music, but it's improving with time. I also like "Poem To a Horse"; many fans have said it's the best on the "Laundry Service" album (it unfortunately bombed when released as single, it's not radio friendly enough I guess). I'm most impressed with her recent ballad "Dreams For Plans" though, it's very "Pies Descalzos" era and the lyrics and emotion in the song are great. I thought she finally broke through to writing in English when I heard this song. It sounds exactly like it would if it were a Spanish Shakira song, but it's in English.

Well it is very successful. This is Shakira first major U.S. radio hit, even surpassing "Whenever Wherever" in airplay. You can't expect fans to be calm and show mild enthusiasm when the song is doing so well on the Pop chart and in overall airplay.
I'm glad that Shakira finally has a hit. I'm going to go "Woooooohooo! Shakira for president! Hips Don't Lie #1!". This opportunity only comes along every once in a while, fans should be allowed to celebrate. It's not really "overexaggerating", fans are just excited and happy that Shakira is having success.

Agreed and I'd like to put more emphasis on "Ojos Asi." It's one of the greatest songs ever recorded, imo.
