A wig-whipping, fist-pounding Lady Gaga has opened the Australian leg of her world tour with no hint of the bruising injury she suffered days ago.

The inimitable performer's show in Brisbane on Wednesday night saw her storming around a gothic castle stage like a bizarre Barbie doll that broke into He-Man's play set and threw a house party.

The Born This Way Ball tour - Gaga's third - is billed as an "electro-metal pop-opera" and delivers something like that, in the way it defies description.

La Gaga is first marched out of her castle on a puppet horse, only to moments later emerge in gold costume from an inflatable zippered womb to perform the anthem 'Born This Way'.

The womb deflates and Gaga struts around the central area of her stage, known as the Monster Pit and reserved for early arriving general admission fans, rocking out 'Bad Romance', one of several past hits in the show.

As we've come to expect from Gaga there's countless eccentric costumes, and she gives her adoring fans her all, throwing everything at the two-hour spectacular.

As she roars, gyrates and tears around the stage in a victory lap with the Australian flag, it's hard to believe that days ago she was accidentally knocked in the head with a pole while performing in Auckland.

The singer tweeted a photo of her "clonker" of a black eye on arriving in Brisbane on Monday, and has been out of public view since.

There were no accidents in Wednesday night's show, but plenty of empowering messages about self-expression and flattery of her "little monsters", as "mother monster" calls her fans.

A highlight was a reinvention of perhaps her most infamous costume to date - the "meat" dress - and something of an explanation for it.

"Did you ever feel like you were treated like a piece of meat?" Gaga asks before sending a dancer into a prop meat grinder and cranking the handle.

Moments later she appears draped across a "meat" lounge and declares something about grinding up her ex-lovers, only now she's wearing a bra made of machine guns and army pants.

It makes no sense at all, but as it's Gaga, it doesn't matter.

Her 110-show world tour continues at Brisbane's Entertainment Centre on Thursday and Saturday nights before heading to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

She then tours through Europe and the UK until October.

I like it to an extent. However, there is one video out there where she only sings half the song and then just runs a couple laps around the stage/catwalk area instead/ of singing the song. I like her doing that run but not at the expense of half the song.

Whether she was shooting a man on stage for daring to simulate cunnilingus on her or dancing with an ecstatic kid, Lady Gaga did not put a spiky-heeled foot wrong last night.

The challenger for the Queen of Pop title brought her Born This Way tour to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre complete with a towering castle as a stage and a message of love and acceptance for all.

She opened it by doing a lap of the stage on a horse before screaming at a man "are you going to pay me?" and pretending to shoot him for attempting to lick her while she lay spread eagled in front of him.

Laga Gaga delivered a perfect dose of pure pop theatre.

She then launched into a rendition of last year's highest selling single Born This Way and welcomed her "Little Monsters".

The show was pure pop theatre, with the premise being that a race of moon people were bringing acceptance to all. Or something.

Who really cared what it was about? Everyone was too overwhelmed by the smoke machines and Gaga's umpteenth costume change.

With the venue packed with strident feminists, gays and bullied kids - there was something in the show foreveryone as Gaga preached equality for all from her million-dollar stage in her custom designer costumes.

She showed off an obscenely fantastic voice in slower songs such as You and I and Edge of Glory while using the help of backing tracks to deliver insane dance routines in songs such as Judas.

Madonna, even with her recently exposed 53-year-old nipple, cannot touch the sort of theatre and experience Gaga is giving her fans.

As she caught her breath halfway through the concert, she sat at a keyboard and told her story of being thrown in a bin when she was a school girl, with the point being bullying is bad.

The crowd roared in agreement, though they also roared in agreement to anything she said, however bizarre.

The crowd was simply lost in the Gaga experience. When she barked "jump" the Entertainment Centre shook, when she demanded "shout" we screamed so loud Queensland got spooked and lost the State of Origin.

Her costumes ranged from a re-imagination of her meat dress to a detailed leather leotard, and the only thing that let the show down occasionally was the poor acoustics of the venue.

Gaga closed the show by bringing a primary school age girl on stage to dance with her as she sang Marry the Night, asking everyone "do you feel stronger after tonight? Do you feel freer?"

The only thing cornier than the question was after two hours of Born This Way escapism, everyone meant it when they screamed back "YES".
