So do you guys think I Wanna Know What Love Is is to blame for Mariah's current position? #Beautiful should have went #1 or at least Top 5. I think that terrible single choice really hurt her career. It was the worst choice on the album. ANYTHING (even Betcha Gon Know, well maybe not) would have made a better 2nd single I would've chosen Angels Cry

I don't think it was I Wanna Know What Love Is. The song got decent worldwide success (and was a smash in Brazil) but by now I think it's completely erased from the public's memory. Nobody remembers it (and its horrid video I can only hope). Even though Obsessed charted quite high, the entire era was an entire mess.

I do and I agree about Angels Cry, the single choices were pretty horrible during the Memoirs era.
My choices would have been:
1. Obsessed
2. Angels Cry
3. Standing O/Ribbon
4. It's A Wrap

Well, I think Bye Bye is what killed her career. I mean, I'll Be Loving U Long TIme was a clear, definite, hit in the making and it just didn't happen because of Bye Bye killing every one bit of momentum she had for the album.
And after that, the singles' performances were never the same (with the exception of Obsessed).

Bye Bye is so good though! But you have a point, still think Memoirs couldve been a very good fresh start for her but IWKWLI killed that chance

I agree with this. Bye Bye is a good song but was the wrong single choice.
I don't even like Bye Bye like that BUT DO NOT get me started. It was a great choice, and was performing better than Touch My Body. It only sunk because no promotion.
And the ONLY times her 2nd single started performing better was One Sweet Day and We Belong Together. Do MAWT make me get the receipts. That song was doing so much better and dropped because she didn't promote it. Don't judge off its peak.

Bye Bye was promoted an American Idol which was still EXTREMELY HUGE IN RATINGS that time and Oprah etc. The public just wasn't here for Bye Bye and I think the marriage overshadowed that era.
We will forever be haunted by the potential #1 or top 5 singles during E=MC2 era.

The public wasn't here for it?
Touch My Body debuted at #57 on Hot 100, Bye Bye debuted at #23. When will MC ever have a 2nd single debut higher again? That's seriously like this 2nd single debuting higher than Beautiful.
That was a HUGE sign people were here for it. and the follow week it reached #19 fell down for 2 weeks AND REPEAKED. That song was literally begging to smash.
Y'all cannot sit here and tell a bitch that a 2nd single debuting better than the LEAD and repeaking despite being treated wrong was a bad choice. NOT TO MENTION it was released almost the exact time her album was released ( a week after). Even with people rather buying the album it still debuted that great, had it been released before the album it would have debuted even stronger digitally.

TMB debuted #57 and reached top 20 with airplay only though. Bye Bye debuted #23 with promo, the biggest show at the planet that time. Again, it was promoted on Oprah and AI and was a follow up to a #1 hit but still failed and hit only #19 after huge promos.
