Steven Antin (The Director) on the history of Burlesque and Christina.
I've always been fascinated by the organic, unstructured nature of early Burlesque. Today, most people think of Burlesque as 20th century convention rooted in second-rate striptease, when in actuality, burlesque was a comedic entertainment that became popular in Europe in the early 18th century as a form of musical and theatrical parody. It was entertainment created for the middle class and was always based in comedy. By the time it reached the height of popularity in late 19th century England, burlesque had evolved into the premier form of musical comedy, parodying current events, popular songs, or books and adapting them to suit the medium's broad and often risque style. It was pure, bona fide pop culture. It wasn't until burlesque gained popularity in the United States that the art reformed itself to resemble the more sexually charged performance that we know today.
I wanted to make a movie that embodied the kind of unadulterated entertainment enjoyed by audiences of the original version of burlesque. I wanted to tell a simple story, with familiar characters, set in an unusual, extraordinary, and fantastical environment. I wanted to use a theatrical setting and a musical backdrop, so I could also pay homage to, and draw inspiration from, the great musicals from Hollywood's Golden Age. I wanted to reintroduce the world to Burlesque.
I wrote the part of Ali with Christina Aguilera in mind. I just could not imagine any other actress for the role. I will never forget the first time Christina walked in my office. She had the confidence of a lioness, with the most piercing blue eyes, perfect porcelain skin, an uncanny wisdom and intelligence, and a completely intoxicating vulnerability. I joined her on the couch, put my hand on her knee and said, "I'm not making this movie without you." She laughed the purest, most honest and contagious laugh. it stole my heart. Christina was the first actress to sign on for Burlesque, and from the beginning, she never ceased to amaze everyone involved with her tirless committment to the film and her innate acting ability. She also delivered, unsolicited, three original songs she wrote and performs in the movie, and they are spectacular. I will be eternally grateful for her collaborative spirit, and her belief and faith in me as a filmaker.

If the movie is successful, it's gonna no doubt be a nice seller throughout the holidays. Hopefully, people buy Bionic, too.
