She was on SiriusXM yesterday talking about the new album with Caroline Polachek (Chairlift) and Alexis Krauss (Sleigh Bells), and she gave a few details about some tracks. 'California' is, actually, a diss track to Pitchfork.

Belly of the Beast I love it. Actually, the only song I don't love is California. I skip it immediately. oh, and the screams in the background of the last chorus of Butterfly slay me so hard.

I thought Pitchfork named Oblivion as the best song of the decade and Visions as the second best album of the decade
Just listened to this and I enjoyed it a lot! It's the first album by her I heard in full because I never got into the Visions sound. RealiTi and Kill V. Maim were my faves. Probably checking out Halfaxa next.
Thats odd to me.
I think its the worst piece shes released thus far.

The more I listen to it the more I dislike it. Its way too lighthearted and pop sounding for me. Not what I want from her at all. And my friend actually brought to my attention that this is the least R&B influenced album shes come out with and I think thats one of the subtle factors as to why I dislike this new direction. Shes more pop/rock than anything here and I think its kind of gross at times (particularly California and Scream). So its not surprising me that this album is appealing to certain people and turning them on to her because they couldnt digest what she'd released in the past. Its because its inarguably her most basic sounding album.
However, I do enjoy Pin and Butterfly.
