I almost agree with you. I don't think it sounds amateurish, but I do think it has this unique quality that's only found in someone trying to experiment with new sounds. I don't think Art Angel's production is amateurish either. More like....the training wheels are coming off for the first time for Utada's musical prowess.
I know people give her English discography **** but I am very convinced that her Japanese work would have turned out very different if Exodus never happened. Creating an album for a new country meant leaving behind old restraints and she was mentally allowed to be really creative
