It's hard to explain. The characters, voice acting, and overall pace/plot are amazing. Not even kidding. The personality in each character is way above any JRPG I've played.
The messiness comes in the actual game itself. The gameplay is quick and fun but sometimes stiff and unresponsive. The frame-rate issues can literally cause you to mess up and take damage. Whenever you have to face a big enemy, it's usually glitchy as hell.
But the core battle system is actually fun, which is why I'm still continuing to play it through all the bugs. And like I said, the writing is top notch. It has all the elements of an AMAZING game just without the engine support.
