I think K-Pop has a lot of variety as well but most western fans of Asian pop like the music that's more easily digested, so the very catchy stuff and the dance pop. So that gets shared on forums like these and that's what non-fans see.
J-Pop's reputation as more diverse is mostly because of Utada, K-Pop doesn't have a brilliant, creative, amazing genius artist like her.
