“Well, maybe it’s just me and my blind optimism to blame
Or maybe it’s you and your sick need to give love then take it away
And you’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand
And I’ll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can”
i mean, like, do people really not get this ****? like this is exactly how i feel about my abuser and i know i’m not alone in this
dear john is a song about abuse, john mayer is an abuser, and anyone who ****s with taylor swift for naming him for his **** is ****ing with me personally and i will treat them as such.
like don’t even go there
counting my footsteps praying the floor won’t fall through again
and my mother accused me of losing my mind
but i swore I was fine
you paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain
and i lived in your chess game, but you changed the rules everyday
wondering which version of you I might get on the phone tonight
well, i stopped picking up and this song is to let you know why
and then
never impressed by me acing your tests
all the girls that you’ve run dry have tired, lifeless eyes
this is classic abuse behavior, serial abuser, “traitors who don’t understand”, that is **** abusers say about the people who left them
but then!
but I took your matches before fire could catch me
so don’t look now
i’m shining like fireworks over
your sad, empty town
like, REVENGE HAPPINESS, she doesn’t need you or your ******** and i am damn proud of her. defend tswift, forever and ever amen

Tess was saying something about this song on twitter and it’s one of the ones I haven’t listened to, I think, but like this kind of solidifies the need to listen to it because are you ****ing kidding me this song.
(via ssshutuppp)
This song is so important and the “you’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand,” line is what struck me the most the first time, punched me right in the ****ing gut, actually, because, yes, jesus ****ing christ, and I was literally so thrown, like, I couldn’t believe I felt like that over a Taylor Swift song, if I’m being perfectly honest, and that was so right and so real and I had this really panicky, almost triggered moment, even though I don’t like using that word and don’t really feel entitled to it. And when that had passed, later, I listened to it again (and again and again and again) and just, ****.
Speak Now is such an interesting album to me because a lot of the narrators are, like, straight-up terrible and ~crazy~ girls, just blatantly and in a way that can be nothing but intentional, and, like, conceptually, thinking about Taylor Swift the writer, Taylor Swift the Real Girl, and Taylor Swift the White Dress Surprise Face Public Figure we or she or someone has her turned into, thinking about those together, I don’t know, it just makes this album and its irrefutably girly nastiness so fascinating to me. The stalker ex in “Speak Now” who ruins a wedding (the whole song is chirpier than Taylor’s usual voice, grating if you’re not too busy being charmed to death by the lash-fluttering wickedness. she’s shocked she was uninvited? she’s mocking the dress and She Gets The Guy!? What? but, also, yes yes yes!!!) and the petty girl-hate of “Better Than Revenge” are the big examples but a kind of gum-smacking audaciousness permeates the whole album (in the best way)) and yet, they all really, really work? They’re really great? I really like “Better Than Revenge” and like, you can probably **** off about ****-shaming, maybe, because vintage dresses really don’t give you dignity, you know, that’s not a lie. (I am kidding about “**** off about ****-shaming,” but not about loving that song and not wanting to hear about why I should not.) I’m not sure what my point here was, other than that I like and appreciate all of those songs, and not in spite of the terribleness Taylor has chosen to endow the various girls of her creation with, but because of it.

and they definitely don’t teach you that in prep school. making fun of prep school and people who went to prep schools, myself DEFINITELY INCLUDED, is such an ethical imperative to me that better than revenge is like basically politically a net win. i’m kidding, basically, what she said, about all of speak now (on the title song you can HEAR her batting her eyelashes in the most disingenuous faux-naivete, it’s amazing). but, anyway, all of this, also, is all amazing, although i would be remiss if i did not share that my #1 favorite thing about dear john are the endless strings of youtube comments reading merely “dear alex” “dear tyson” “dear jordan” “dear mike.” that is never not really beautiful to me.

Not, Dear Jesus.
I Almost Do will have an amazing music video. Listening to the song in isolation has made me appreciate the song so much more.

Not me only just finding out John Mayer once tweeted "One day you wake up and find there is no bigger bed to crawl into”. Not anybody thinking 'Innocent' is about Kanye.

I want Taylor to release a piano version of All Too Holy. Just her voice and a piano. That would be so amazing.

You know that feeling you get when you see song lyrics and already love the song -- before you've even heard one single second of it? Well, that's about to happen. Because these lyrics to the Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift collaboration on "Highway Don't Care" are that moving. It looks like there are going to be a lot of "I can't live without you" references in the chorus, but what I think will be the better hook is this line: "The highway don't care, but I do." The story is essentially about a breakup, and McGraw is telling his love that he knows she's driving (too fast) away from him and trying not to think, so she turns on the radio. Then comes the line, "That song is always on, so you sing along." And as good as it feels to hit the road and drive, there are things the highway just can't do. The highway won't hold you tonight, doesn't know you are alive, doesn't care if you are all alone, won't dry your tears, doesn't need you here and doesn't care if you are coming home. McGraw and Swift sing that part together. And when his album Two Lanes of Freedom comes out on Feb. 5, I'll finally get to hear this duet I already love.
