I just finished the
Kirby Planet Robobot! What an amazing game,
hopefully the end of an era though...
The past three Kirby main story games have all kinda been the same thing: 2.5D side scrolling platformer, copy abilities with fleshed out move-sets like
Super Star, a gimmick feature (super abilities, hyper nova, or mech suit), and a cute set of alliteration worlds whose first letters spell out a word to hint at the evil overarching plot line, 2 sets of collectible items, a hard mode, an arena, and some mini games. I love Returns to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, and Robobot a lot, probably some of the best in the series, but the formula is getting a tad stale in my opinion.
I'd probably say for video games I'm a Kirby stan foremost, and I think HAL has pretty much perfected the Kirby series for sidescrollers. However, with the 25th anniversary coming up soon, I believe that the series is long overdue to evolve.
And by evolve, I'm not just saying they should play with the game style like the cute lil spinoffs they've been doing for years...
In Planet Robobot, HAL implemented a fragment of
the 2nd unfinished Kirby Gamecube game that eventually became
Return's to Dreamland and made it into the bite-size 3 stage adventure that is
Kirby 3D Rumble. I think now that the side scrolling Kirby games have reached a peak in quality at least for now, to prevent more of simply the same games with different gimmicks,
HAL should move forward and develop a full fledged 3D Kirby game. They can always go back to side scrolling after if it ultimately fails, but a 3D Kirby game should at least be given a chance to be received by gamers to judge whether the super tough pink puff holds his ground in another dimension. Hell, a Kirby game in the style of Mario Galaxy would make perfect sense seeing as planetoids would be traveled to and from via warpstar like parts of levels now!
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get my thoughts out there
