Sly and the Family Simpson
We've got much more goss from the Hornitos (what a lovely name, eh?) tequila launch party at Opera last week. Ashlee Simpson was the hostess of the alcohol-soaked soiree and was chirping and chatting away on the carpet about her new album, which got us thinking about blonder, boobier sis Jessica, who's reportedly going country for her next project. Any chance she and Jess would ever do a song together...a Simpson sisters duet, maybe?“We write well together,” Ashlee answered semidiplomatically. “I can't say never, but she's definitely got her own style, and I have my own style. But who knows? Maybe one night we'll be sitting up writing songs together.”We'd love to hear those hons pen a rap about Papa Joe, you? Anyway, Ash has certainly survived her share of performances gone wrong (SNL, anyone?) and public humiliation, so we wanted to know A's advice for Britney, after her VMA bomb.“To tell you the truth, I have not seen the performance,” Ash hedged. “I was actually sitting upstairs, so I can't say anything on it—but I wish her the best.” Oh, please! Even if A-babe wasn't in the theater at the time of Brit's derailing, you so know she watched it in on YouTube later with Pete Wentz. “I think we all have our ups and our downs, and you gotta look for the positive side of things,” she finally offered, rather lamely.
Ashlee is so cute with Britney and Britney's fans always are bashing her

Britney is a bad parent but I wouldn't go so far as saying any parent is better than Britney. I don't think Britney has beat her kids, drown her kids, or molested her kids so she isn't even close to the worst parent. She just needs to stop using drugs and drinking and take care of her kids. But this is an Ashlee thread so let's keep the Britney talk in Britney's topic.

I do love Ashlee’s rock sound, but I don’t see what the big deal is about her experimenting. No artist wants to put out the same album every time. It’s normal for them to want to break out and try new types of music. I’m all for a dance music album from her. She already had some songs like that on I Am Me.
Kelly Clarkson didn’t want to put out Breakaway part 2, so she did her own thing. And you know what? I love her new album. It’s different and people gave her a lot of crap about it. But I am so proud of her for doing her own thing and not just doing the marketable, easy hit album. And maybe she didn’t sell as many albums as she would have had she done Breakaway part 2, but who cares? She wanted more freedom cause she had something to say.
Plus, it’s not like an artist can’t have a flop and then come back after that. By the way, a lot of “flop” albums don’t get the credit they deserve. We’ll just have to wait and see. And I actually like her new sound. It’s a change and every time an artist changes their style, they lose fans, but her true fans will stick by her. Like me. I love Ashlee.

The problem is Ashlee can't afford another flop. Even though I don't consider I Am Me a complete flop it did a lot worse than Autobiography. If this album does worse than I Am Me she will never be taken seriously anymore and most likely will be dropped by her label.
Look at what happened with Aerosmith when they released Just Push Play. That was an album where Steven Tyler wanted to "experiment" and they produced their own album and it was just a bunch of pro tools crap and although it wasn't dance music it was so heavily layered you couldn't even hear the guitars in almost all the songs. The album was crap and Aerosmith fans hated it.
Then when they did their Honkin on Bobo album which was a blues cover album that the fans had been screaming for them to do for years it didn't sell much better but it did decent on the charts and more importantly the fans and critics gave Honkin on Bobo awesome reviews and almost all the fans loved the album. So the lesson there is when you have a formula that works, sometimes it's not a good idea to change it.
You can still keep your style of music and have a new sound. Again it's like with Aerosmith. Their best albums were the albums they did in the 70s. Along with Pump (1989) and Honkin on Bobo (2004) But each of those albums stayed true to the Aerosmith sound but yet none of those albums sounded like the previous album. Just like Autobiography didn't sound anything like I Am Me but both were great albums.
The problem is, I became a fan of Ashlee because I love her rock sound. Now that she has completely abandoned that sound there is no reason for me to support her. It would be like if Aerosmith started making rap albums. I know they worked with Run DMC on a remake of Walk This Way and I didn't like that remix either but it was only one song. This is an entire album. It would be like if Britney came out with a country album...actually, that would be more successful than Ashlee's urban/Jamaican sound will be.
Also, Aerosmith after 30 years of being successful can afford a bad album and they can recover. Ashlee after 3 albums can't afford to have 2 out of 3 albums be bad selling albums. A band like Aerosmith can not have an album come out for 5 years yet still go and tour every year and sell out arenas across the country. Ashlee is having a hard time filling small clubs. If she loses even more fans with this album she won't even be able to tour because no one will come to her shows.
Also, I have seen comments from other people on her two new songs and they echoed my feelings that Ashlee won't even sing live when she plays these songs because she'll just use pre-recorded synthesized beats and vocals. I also doubt anyone in her band will stick with her. I mean with this new crap she is doing she doesn't even need a band...she just needs a tape recorder with pre-recorded beats.
Trust me, if this is what her entire album sounds like it will be her biggest flop yet.

Jessica and Ashlee Simpson's Dad wants to be his own man:
Joe Simpson found out the hard way in 2001 that he'd put all of his business hopes on the shoulders of his daughter Jessica's singing career.
Jessica Simpson got off to a great start, but then her CD sales stalled. And so did his fortunes.
"At that point, she was our sole income and I saw the pressure it put on her," Simpson told the Daily News. "I went to her and said, 'You know, I'll never put you into that position again. I'll never make you feel like you have to work so that I can eat.'"
He admits now he was unprepared for the downturn. As a result, he needed to diversify, expanding into television and movie production, so they'd never been in that position again.
"We've worked consistently hard since then to make our [own] business lives so that if Jessica wants to get married and have babies, or [singing sister] Ashlee wants to get married and have babies, they're feeling no pressure from me."
Simpson's latest effort in that regard is ABC's "Women's Murder Club," a new fall series, starring Angie Harmon, inspired by novels from James Patterson. He's also developing a series around Patterson's book "Midnight Club," about a wheelchair-bound hero cop.
Simpson and his partners are getting ready to shop the show to networks. He also has a show called "Emerald City," which he describes as a "Wizard of Oz" in high school, and another project set in a boarding school.
"He's very aggressive, he's a big reader. He can be very persuasive," Patterson told the Daily News. "He does what he says he's going to do. He has incredible energy, and I've been with his family a few times, they're very nice. They're very together, a close-knit family."
Having two daughters entrenched in the entertainment world helps open doors, Simpson said. "But you live and die by the talent you have in you."
"One of the things Joe and I share," Patterson said, "is we really understand mass audiences and we have respect for them. We try to do the best work we can and not talk down to them."
With TV projects in the works, and about eight movies in various stages of development, Simpson said his company is in good shape, and neither Jessica nor Ashlee need worry.
"She could quit tomorrow and we'll be fine," he said of Jessica. "We're better when she works, but we can definitely sustain ourselves. We have enough stuff happening, and I think that's great. The girls should work when they want to work. And we're blessed with girls who want to work all the time."

Joe is a jerk. Why can't he go out and get his own job instead of making his money pimping his daughters? I hope Ashlee and Jess get a brain and leave their father.

i didn't like "murder" i'd rather go and wait.. i mean, she deserves another #1 album on the hot 200.. she's so good!
i think it's better for her to wait until she's ready to do what she'll do... and hopefully she can get her third #1 album!

Unfortunately I think a lot of people NEVER took Ashlee seriously. It still doesn’t bother me that she’s experimenting with her sound. I liked the murder leak a lot. And rule breaker was decent too. Honestly I think she'll make it work. At least I hope.

I agree with what you said about if Aerosmith changed their sound to rap. I wouldn’t listen either. But I actually like dance music. It makes you want to move and I like dancing. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t bother me. I also agree that her old sound was more likeable. Something about it seemed more… personal than this. Still, I wish her the best.

At this point I would say she should work with John Shanks again. At least he would be better than Timbo. But I guess Geffen didn't like Shanks. That figures...Both Geffen and Columbia didn't like Aerosmith working with Jack Douglas but Jack was the best thing that happened to Aerosmith. Unfortunately, Ashlee doesn't have the pull of her own career to say F- You to the record label like Aerosmith does.

Why did Geffen not like John? He made her. "Autobiography" is probably one of the few albums I can listen to it all the way through and he wrote/produced every song on their. "I Am Me" has a few skippers, but it still was a great album. :-/
God I'm praying "Murder" sounds at least 5% better in HQ. The only good thing about that song is Travis' part.

I don't know, I just read a comment from John Shanks saying he would like to work with Ashlee again but the political situation with the record label might not allow it. I will try to find the exact quote again.
