I hope they're right. 3.5 million would break the combined albums/singles Soundscan record of 3.44-3.45 million in one week,, currently held by Candle In The Wind 1997 record of 3.44-3.45 million. I'll say 1.25 million for week two.
1) 3.5m this week and +500k per week the rest of this year, she's doing 6m (considering she's totally selling 1m next week and most likely on Xmas)
2) 2m next year (with only 1 single released so far),
3) 1m in 2017 (Grammy effect)
4)1m in catalog sales (with boosts from new eras)
It's not about talent. Adele has some obviously but thousands of artists who have just as much talent don't sell as many records in their career as she does in a week.
It's about having artists who appeal to all demographics. The issue is first and foremost that labels have promoted artists who appeal to one or two demographics guaranteeing some album sales but nowhere near as much as what Adele manages.
You're right. I guess "talent" wasn't the right word to use, but moreso "demographic". I think the problem with labels is they only make their artists target the young demographic like 95% of the time and that's the demo that rarely actually buys music. There's just so many people that preach "sales are dead streaming is the future" but I've always disagreed with this. I guess what I was trying to say is that the GP is still willing to buy music, it just takes someone like Adele, who you just mentioned reaches multiple demographics, to do so.
