March 2012
Modern Rock
It's a no-brainer that the song I pegged at the end of 2011 to be the first big song of 2012 holds the #1 spot for the second consecutive month. Gotye has a potentially mammoth crossover hit on his hands, and this needs to be promoted properly so it gets its proper due on CHR and HAC. At #2 is Of Monsters & Men, a band that hybrids the lush instrumentation of Arcade Fire and vocal sounds of the Decemberists, and who have been quietly creeping up the top 20 at Alternative radio with their terrific lead single. A barrage of songs make huge charges within and into the top 10 this week. Black Keys have a sold out Toronto gig coming up in less than 2 weeks, and with this song now being used in NCAA March Madness promo, it could be a sure lock for #1 next month following up previous #1 "Lonely Boy". Bush and Red Hot Chili Peppers are following up top 10 hits with their latest, while newcomers from Fueled by Raymen fun. are feeding off mega Superbowl commercial hype with "We Are Young" - a catchy, anthemic sure to be smash. City & Color score their third consecutive top 10 hit from 'Little Hell' - talk about consistency Canada! UK mega-band Kasabian score a second top 10 from 'Velociraptor!' with a track that's a reflective change of pace for the normally abrasive rockers. Due to all the big moves, that means lots of tracks take dives this week too. Plus, how great is that Jack White track? I'm late catching on so expect a big move next month. And I'm hearing nothing but great things about the Bruce Springsteen album - so I'll be checking that out soon, along with the albums from Sleigh Bells, the Of Monsters & Men EP, and the buzzing album from fun.. Hearing loads of great things about Alabama Shakes as well - "Hold On" is a sensational track.

Just when you think it wasn't possible, Katy Perry takes her 'Teenage Dream' era to stunning new heights with the lead single off it's re-release. "Part of Me" is the third #1 single from the era, behind "California Girls" and "Teenage Dream" - while all other singles hit the top 10 or better. POM is probably her best from the era alongside TD. Another song that wouldn't sound out of place on a Katy Perry record is "Domino" from Jessie J, the UK phenom finally getting her North American due, with a track I was extremely late catching on to but I'm glad I did. Leading up to the monumental anticipation for the Hunger Games, Taylor Swift and Grammy sweethearts The Civil Wars take their stunning soundtrack single to #3. Swift has never sounded better and the Civils are right on cue, if very under-utilized. Anyone who has read the book knows the perfect moment for this song to be used in the movie. Hopefully they'll do it right. Childish Gambino got a lot of glowing reviews in the 2011 year-end forum, and now I can see why, "Heartbeat" is a killlller track with brilliant lyrics. Holy crap Rihanna. She currently leads three singles on the chart and is featured on two more, for a total of 5 on this month's chart. Talk about ownage. I've always been partial to the ridiculous "Birthday Cake", so I'm glad it got full treatment even if it is with Breezy. Along with the rest of the world, the triumphant return of Adele at the Grammy's and Brit's, where she was treated like the music royalty she is, sparked re-interest on my chart. Given that RHI is now the 4th single, it could get yet another life on the chart; while the perennial RITD may not fall off too quickly either. The song never gets old. And is one of the big trends for 2012 UK Boybands? Onedirection I cannot tolerate, but something about "Glad You Came" from The Wanted is really catchy - maybe it's that crazy accordion lead in? It's crazy that Kelly Clarkson has her biggest hit since SUBG with "Stronger" - while it's probably her least successful performance on my chart for her thus far. SUBG, BTHE, BOY, NA, MLWSWY, IDNHU, AG, MKIA - all hit the top 10 or better. Albums to check out: Childish Gambino, and there's a new track from John Mayer which will blow up on the chart next month.

Did not even know that "Goodbye Kiss" was an official single. Oh, and BRUUUUUCE.
And yes, we shall push "Heartbeat" to the top. Get the band together, because IT IS HAPPENING.

New Rock
- So the biggest music story this year has to be Gotye, who has now been at #1 for three straight months. He's the early front runner for best song of the year.
- So the Black Keys/Arctic Monkeys show in Toronto a few weeks ago was hands down one of the best rock shows I've seen since Muse/Silversun Pickups. Black Keys were born and bred for the stadium and if it wasn't for Gotye's timeless hit, "Gold On The Ceiling" would be their second straight #1. Close behind are the Arctic Monkeys, who dare I say, put out their best song since "Brianstorm". "R U Mine" is a **** show return to form and it was an absolute racuous live.
- Imagine Dragons have come out of nowhere and are currently top 20 on Alternative, in a similar fashion to Of Monsters & Men who are nearly top 10. Two exceptional tracks you need to check out if you haven't already.
- Staple bands: RHCP, Florence, Bush, City & Color, all doing their thing - plus the latest from Foster The People and Foo Fighters, with two of the best singles from their respective albums finally getting their due
- So on the radar, new singles from Hives, Temper Trap, Dirty Heads, and Linkin Park are all due for a crash landing. And to get things rolling is the newest from Silversun Pickups - which is not as immediate as "Panic Switch", but has that sweet sensibility akin to "Substitution" - great stuff.
1. Gotye f. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know (1)

- Taylor Swift scores only her second #1 single, following "You Belong With Me", by capitalizing on the monstrous success of the Hunger Games.
- Calvin Harris shows dance will be a huge force in 2012 with a big debut for his latest with Ne Yo, and some upward movement for his current hit "Feels So Close". No stranger to the dance game but upping the ante is Madonna, with a desperately needed Avicci remix to her already good "Girl Gone Wild". This remix is absolute fire. Hope it does well for her after the misfire that was "Gimme All Your Luvin".
- Nicki Minaj takes one from the book of "Superbass", and just in the nick of time as she finally lands a desperately needed hit single from her forthcoming album. Big payoff in this chorus.
- Drake and Rihanna are killing the game right now. Drake is on board with three lead singles, while Rihanna also has three and is featured on two more. Unreal. "Where Have You Been" and "Crew Love" have always been two of my favorites, so they should do very well.
- New John Mayer on board, probably would have been #2 or #3 a few weeks ago but he's really lost some momentum given his reoccuring vocal granuloma and tour cancellations. Not his fault, but takes the wind out of his sails for sure.
- Are boybands & teen pop making a come back? While I can't stand OneDirection, The Wanted have a hell of a catchy beat in "Glad You Came" as it quietly works towards the top 5. Also falling in the shameful category? Carly Rae Jespen. I haven't been this ashamed of myself for liking a song since "Boyfriend" by Ashlee Simpson.
- The new Usher track is something Chris Brown could learn a lesson from. Nice fusion of the classic rnb vibe we expect, but also incorporating some Diplo-laden beats.
1. Taylor Swift f. The Civil Wars - Safe & Sound (3)

May 2012
Alternative
Make that four consecutive months up top for Gotye with his now multi-format smash. It wasn't an easy fourth go-around however, as Arctic Monkeys made a serious surge all month and ended up just falling short of their 5th #1 hit, while newcomers Walk The Moon explode with a +18 gain to the runner up spot, with a song that has the potential to be the song of the summer. I've heard it referred to as, "the song the Killers are trying to write in the studio right now" - which is eerily accurate.
Huge charges into the top 10 this month are led by a monstrous, believe-the-hype Top 5 debut for Alabama Shakes. "Hold On" is a tour de force, and the album is remarkably good, get on board if you haven't already. Garbage, who are showing they can still sell concert tickets, explode into the top 5 with their latest. The band is no stranger to the top of the chart as "Why Do You Love Me" previously hit #1 for 4 weeks.
Speaking of no strangers to chart success, the top 10 is filled out by core artists. Silversun Pickups are following up three straight top 5 hits from 'Swoon' with the lead single off their forthcoming album, a track that definitely grows rather than immediately commanding your attention. Love the lyrics. On just one day of exposure, the new Metric makes a commanding #7 debut. "Youth Without Youth" is part Muse meets part Nirvana, dashed with glittery-electronic riffs that is void of a true chorus, but somehow still works well. Metric are following up four top ten's from 'Fantasies', including the #1 song of 2009, "Gimme Sympathy" which spent 6 weeks at #1. Linkin Park are back with another tool from their tool box, nothing spectacular, but still very good. Could fit on a forthcoming Transformers soundtrack. I had the pleasure of seeing Red Hot Chili Peppers live last week, which was probably the best show I've seen since Muse 2 years back, and that helps "Look Around" maintain some top 10 longevity this week.
Foo Fighters are quietly making their way up towards the top 10 with my favorite track off 'Wasting Light', my #2 album in 2011. Nice debuts for the latest Jack White, whose album 'Blunderbuss' has been a sure **** commercial and critical surprise. Good job Jack. And last but not least, the Avengers Assemble for the new Soundgarden track, which is more Audioslave than anything else, but still kicks serious ass.

Top 40
The poster childs of Top 40 radio take command of this months chart, starting off with Drake who explodes into the #1 spot with his current Rhythmic single "Crew Love", a track thats always been one of my favorites off 'Take Care'. Speaking of album favorites, Rihanna similarily rockets to #2 with "Where Have You Been", an instant fan adored track from the puzzling 'Talk That Talk'. After the profound success of "We Found Love", Rihanna definitely misfired with her next two tracks, both commercially as well as on my chart, with "You Da One" failing to go top 5, and "Talk That Talk" failing to go top 10. Nonetheless, WHYB is dynamite Rihanna and I think was appropriately released at this time now that the WFL fire seems to have finally subsided.
The theme of this months chart is multiples! Starting us off are The Wanted, who take their debut single into the top 3, and debut just outside the top 10 with the similarily tempo'd "Chasing The Sun". I have to admit, I'm baffled at their lacklustre 35k debut this week, which was remarkably lower than the OneDirection debut and still less than 1D months later. Usher is doing wonders to promote his upcoming album, his promo single "Climax", some of his best work in years, shoots up to #4 - while his dancefloor destined new single "Scream" also sees an explosive top 10 debut. Usher scored three top 10 hits off his previous album, and could see his third off his new album as his latest Urban single, "Lemme See" with Rick Ross is also a winner. Calvin Harris scores a top 10 double as his long standing "Feels So Close" hits a new peak at #5 while his duet with Ne Yo slides to #9. Carly Rae Jepsen was trending top 3 for a few weeks this past month but slides down to a lower top 10 peak. The novelty of this track is starting to wear, but it's unprecedented 4 consecutive 100k+ sales weeks in the UK has been a sight to see. To round out the top 10 is Nicki Minaj whose new album has been a much lauded critical and commercial dissapointment, despite the fact that "Starships" and new debut "Right By My Side" fit right in the Minaj hit-machine wheelhouse.
Many debuts below the top 10 as well. DJ Khaled is back with his newest mega collaboration. Many will remember last year when "I'm On One" dethroned Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" from #1 after an 8-month reign. Kris Allen is an extremely unlucky American Idol contestant. "Live Like You Were Dying" was a top 10 hit for me, and his latest "The Vision of Love" is more of the that same solid sound with good vocals, fast delivery, and sound songwriting. Maroon 5 are also on board with their latest "Payphone", following up the #7 peak of "Moves Like Jagger". M5 haven't had a bonafide hit since "Makes Me Wonder", which peaked at #1, and I don't think this is the song to buck the trend.
1. Drake f. The Weeknd - Crew Love (14)
2. Rihanna - Where Have You Been? (16)
3. The Wanted - Glad You Came (6)
4. Usher - Climax (18)
5. Calvin Harris - Feels So Close (8)

The Alt countdown remains awesome. I fully expect "Eyes Wide Open" and "Houdini" to be here next month.
As for Pop, well, the top two and Calvin Harris are good...oh, and Example! And Adele, of course. Most of the rest, I haven't even heard...but that's to be expected.

June 2012
This chart marks the half-way mark for 2012! Crazy son.
After a commanding 4-month reign at the top, the super-saturated “Somebody That I Used To Know” slides to #5 to make room for some familiar faces. On the heels of their much anticipated new album, ‘Synthetica’, Metric score their third #1 on the chart with the lead single from the album. Nipping on their Canadian heels are song of the summer candidates Walk The Moon with the extra-catchy “Anna Sun”. Silversun Pickups leap into the top 5 to score their fourth consecutive top 5 hit with a track that could rally for #1. Alabama Shakes hold on tight in the top 5 as good will from live shows continue to drive the success story for their incredible album, ‘Boys & Girls’. City & Color, aka Dallas Green, proves patience is a virtue as he finally delves deeper into the top 10 with “The Grand Optimist”, the follow-up to two top 5 hits off his great album ‘Little Hell’. It’ll be hard for Gotye to follow-up his behemoth smash but if any track can do it it’s “Eyes Wide Open”, and Foo Fighters crack the top 10 with “Bridge Burning making it the third track to do so off the #2 album of 2011, ‘Wasting Light’.
Besides Kelly Clarkson and a few one-off tracks, American Idol talent has not usually fared to well on the chart, particularly the Alternative one. The trend changes with recent coronation Phillip Phillips, who shocked the hell out of me when I heard his lead single, which is an obvious ode to the musical stylings of Mumford & Sons, it sounds great. Other new faces include UK-stars Alex Clare and Emeli Sande, who are beginning to make an appropriate splash Stateside with their fantastic singles
Near the bottom rung of the chart is a whackload of new tracks. First up includes The Shins, who are trying to follow up the top 5 hit "Simple Song" from one of the better albums I've heard this year, 'Port of Morrow'. Also up is Foster The People, who are looking for their fourth top 10 hit off 'Torches' and just might get it with fan favorite "Houdini". Up next is Serj Tankian, who has always done well with System on the chart, but only hit #12 with “Empty Walls”, his latest is a ferocious slice of political misdemeanour, so it could do well. Also new is the latest from Billy Talent, who have scored a handful of top 10 hits in the past with their best being the #2 peak for “Nothing To Lose”. I’ve only had one day exposure to their new single, but it should see a nice run in the future.
One last mention, big fizzle out for Linkin Park and “Burn It Down” this week. Hopefully the remainder of their album can provide a bit more substance.

CHR
Usher is no stranger to chart success, placing plenty of singles in the top 10, but only two have ever hit #1, “Yeah!”, and “DJ Got Us Falling In Love”. As his new album prepares to drop, he not only scores yet another #1 with the dance-hall heavy “Scream”, but he also places two others in the top 10. Grammy shoe-in “Climax” continues it’s presence in the top 5, while new Rhythmic single “Lemme See” pops its head into the top 10. All signs are pointing to a solid album debut. After a month up top, Drake slides to #2 with album fav “Crew Love”. By releasing “HYFR” to Rhythmic, it seems that it has taken the sails out of “Crew Love” for any further movement. Rihanna remains a presence in the top 5 as she begins to save some face after a few misfires in her single choices off ‘Talk That Talk’. Last year’s Adele spoiler, DJ Khaled, takes an unexpected leap to #5 with his latest mega-collabo.
Speaking of American Idol, there is some new found presence on the CHR chart as well. Kris Allen, who is a few steps away from being dropped by his label, follows-up his last top 10 hit “Live Like You Were Dying”, with the uplifting “The Vision of Love”. Thankfully, the song is finding some traction on HAC. Kelly Clarkson rarely misfires on the chart, which is why it came as a surprise that her biggest hit ever “Stronger” failed to go top 10 here. Nonetheless, her latest “Dark Side” is in the same vein as previous hits like “Breakaway”, and should do well. Also surprising the hell outta me was the lead single from Haley Reinhart, talk about soul. Pleasantly impressed.
Two of the biggest stars in the Pop music game round out the top 10 this week. Justin Bieber has surprised the hell out of Radio PR everywhere as “Boyfriend” begins an unprecendented resurgence on CHR and Rhythmic, spurring very lofty expectations for the debut sales week figures for his upcoming album. Not to mention, his latest tour sold out everywhere in less than an hour. Oh Canada, indeed. Speaking of Canada, Carly Rae Jepsen is still kicking around with the ubiquitous “Call Me Maybe”. And even more Canada? Drake debuts his 6th track off 'Take Care' with "HYFR", following up the five top 10's he's already latched up off the ground breaking album.
Rita Ora is the latest Jay Z protégé and she’s got a real sunny slice of contemporary goodness in “How We Do”, that should play well throughout the summer. Also up is the latest in never ending singles from ‘Teenage Dream’, as Katy Perry re-appears with “Wide Awake”. Although the album has already spawned four #1 singles on the chart (Cali, TD, ET, POM), this one may be lucky to just go top 10. And how about The Wanted, after a really promising start with “Glad You Came”, they dropped some nasty comments about American Sweethearts and saw a wave of negative publicity overshadow the debut of their EP, which bowed to dismal, nowhere close to OneDirection type of numbers. The snowball effect is starting to show as “Chasing The Sun” is having a hard time finding traction at radio.
Special mention to Chris Brown, who has been in the top 10 nearly all year with "Turn Up The Music", and is now on board with "Don't Wake Me Up", which has the potential to be "Beautiful People"-level big if it get's the proper push.
1. Usher – Scream (6)
2. Drake f. The Weeknd – Crew Love (1)
3. Rihanna – Where Have You Been? (2)
4. Usher – Climax (4)
5. DJ Khaled f. Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj – Take It To The Head (12)
6. Kris Allen – The Vision Of Love (13)
7. Chris Brown f. Rihanna – Turn Up The Music (8)
8. Usher f. Rick Ross – Lemme See (-)
9. Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe (7)
