No 21 was defiantly bigger but to say it is the biggest era next to thriller is a no.

If you compare chart positions and the length on the charts around the world (and not sales seeing as 21 is in a disadvantaged era) then Thriller is the only past era that competes with 21, you might find that surprising or frightening but it's the truth. If 21 was released years ago it would be selling 50 million MINIMAL.

Majority of those albums were released during a time when albums actually sold extremely well and it took years to sell those albums, while 21 was released during the peak of piracy and digital. I'm not going to say it's the second biggest album of all-time because it's hard to judge inflation, but you can't "overrate" the success of 21 when the numbers are current and there to judge. It's one of the biggest eras of all-time and it competes with some of the best from back in the day, that is fact. People need to give credit when due instead of always throwing in "impact" and things that really have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

they sold more because they are from an album selling period. literally no other album, not even thriller had a more impressive chart run.

See the only reason 21 sold as much as it did was because it was a fresh new thing for radio because dance pop was still slaying and she finally brought some soulful and non generic lyrical content to radio and people assumed it was "real music" because it wasn't dance pop. It really wouldn't stand out in the 90s and before that. And DSOTM and Rumours like many of those albums I listed appear many times in itunes 200 and billboard 200 all the time. And DSOTM holds the record for the longest chart run out of any album on the billboard 200 and worldwide charts

It doesn't ****ing matter why it sold what it did. The point is that it did and was the only one of its era to do it. Stop trying to discredit the success of 21. After three years, the album is still selling. If it was just about the whole "dance vs. 'real music'" people would have been moved on from it. It's just one of the few albums that people just buy for years on like Rumours and DSOTM.

The only reason people don't buy albums anymore is because artists like Katy or Kesha (I use that term lightly) release singles that are crap and the GP knows they are crap but bop anyway, but back then people made music with real pain and actually cared about what they made and it is pretty obvious that people used to put a lot more effort into their music then they do today and they didn't make music for the charts
