It was Rachel Summers travel back in the comic but it would be unfamiliar/messy to the general audience so they decide to do mind travelling through time instead, and Logan was the obvious choice.

i think i read somewhere that pryde was supposed to travel to the past but since she was so young in the original series that couldn't happen so they went for wolveine....

That also has alot to do with Rogue's scene. After the events that happen in paris, mistque follows them back to the mansion thats where they have the "confrontation". Thats where logan has a glimpes/dream of Rogue taking over Kitty. Logan wakes says her name, beast walks in and tells him Mistques run off.

Yep, I think it's pretty great.

It's expected, but I wouldn't say great. Internationally it should hold stronger with Japan only opening this weekend.

i don't underdtand why for x-men movies is always difficult to reach the 700 millions / 1 billions at boxoffice! it's one of the most famous franchises(comics , cartoons ecc...) and in my opinion is better than comics like iron man an 10000 times better than batman or superman (who anyway are much more sucessfull at boxoffice)!

Starting off most of the Iconic Xmen are dead, before this movie starts
Professor X, cyclops, jean ( Rogue, Nightcrawler, gambit are not involved)

Leavin Wolverine to star with support from mystique, magento and storm
and some blister like kitty and iceman

Xmen 2 did so well becasue everyone was involved

The only ones that fall into that era are Wolverine Origins, First Class and The Wolverine. The first three were released in a time before 3D ticket prices were the norm thanks to Avatar.

Origins was universally panned by critics for being terrible, hence it fell in gross compared to Last Stand. First Class was a total reboot with new actors for each role, a risk that made money but with no megastar in it there wasn't much chance of a home run (JLaw and Fassbender were both unknowns largely then). The Wolverine had good reviews and did really well internationally, but a solo Logan movie just doesn't have the draw a full-cast X-Men movie has.

Days Of Future Past looks set to crack $700M based on how it's doing at the moment. X-Men just isn't as popular with as many people as The Avengers/Iron Man is. The stories in X-Men are much darker and have a lot of political drama undertones and realism in them - that's not always super fun to watch and so a younger demo don't really care for them. Iron Man and The Avengers are comic book movies through-and-through, they're almost constantly light and look great.
