by Black Eyed Peas
The Los Angeles-based quartet Black Eyed Peas is possibly the greatest bubble gum group of the Extreme Ice Fruit Explosion era. Following in the path forged by the Monkees, the Archies and the Spice Girls, the Peas present themselves as a cast of zany characters whose music is, on one level, like a child's game, and on another, as calculatedly smart and seductive as test-marketed pop gets. "The E.N.D.," the group's fifth studio album and the third since the singer Stacy Ferguson (better known as Fergie) joined and took it from the earnest hip-hop underground to the glamorous, necessarily compromised pop mainstream, is more accomplished and more confounding than any of the foursome's previous efforts. It's likely to dominate radio and the Internet this summer, its sharp flavors simultaneously driving listeners nuts and drawing them back.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Boom Boom Pow
04) I Gotta Feeling
03) Meet Me Halfway
02) Alive
01) Rock That Body |
![](http://i46.tinypic.com/5d3tdt.jpg) | 14. "Toyz"
by Cinema Bizarre
After hearing about Cinema Bizarre's new album, Toyz, I officially made it one of my life's goals to get this CD! I'd listen to the tracks online every day, until I could finally get my own copy, because every song on this album is absolutely amazing-I'm not over exaggerating either. Each song has a signature of it's own, whether it's dancable, heavy, or softer, each one stands out from the others, and that's what is so great about Toyz. You get so many different moods by just sitting back and listening to the lyrics and/or melodies of the album. Songs like "I Came 2 Party" and "Out of Love" are the types of tunes that will make you dance like there's no tomorrow, while "My Obsession" and "Heaven is Wrapped in Chains" have such powerful and beautiful lyrics that no one can fully describe the feeling. I'm officially in love with these androgynous German boys because of this CD. Final Attraction was great too, but once Toyz came out, you can definitely see that Cinema Bizarre just keeps gaining more and more potential. Before you know it, they'll rule the world.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Deeper And Deeper
04) I Came 2 Party (Feat. Space Cowboy)
03) My Obsession
02) Heaven Is Wrapped In Chains
01) Blasphemy |
![](http://i47.tinypic.com/et6zyo.jpg) | 13. Ke$ha
by Animal
Even if you only listen to what’s on the radio sparingly it is likely that you have heard some of Ke$ha’s music, as Animal’s lead single “Tik Tok” broke all kinds of download records for a female in the US. You may also recognize her from Flo Rida’s mammoth single “Right Round,” which was huge about a year or so ago. Either way, you’ll likely have a decent idea of what her music is all about, and I think it can be summer up fairly accurately in just one word: fun. Many tracks on this record have the potential to emulate the success of the brazen “Tik Tok,” – don’t be surprised if the likes of “Your Love is My Drug,” “Kiss ‘n’ Tell” and “Backstabber” dominate the airwaves in 2010.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Tik Tok / Kiss N Tell
04) Your Love Is My Drug / Backstabber
03) Take It Off
02) Hungover
01) Dancing With Tears In My Eyes |
![](http://i49.tinypic.com/52c461.jpg) | 12. "Lungs"
by Florence + The Machine
Florence is Florence Welsh, a self-described pretty pale girl, and the Machine are one brilliant backing band. But they are a backing band, because this is Florence’s show. And what a show it is. Just that voice, the one heard many months ago coming from absolutely nowhere, a mix of jazz and folk and blue-eyed soul like nothing in a long time. Or rather, like everything. Lungs is a vast jumble of influences, from Kate Bush and Tori Amos to UK electronica (on the Source/Candi Staton cover “You’ve Got the Love”), with Florence’s voice taking on most of the work. But before going on, we’ve got to deal with “Kiss with a Fist”, Florence’s first single and still one of her best. I admit that when I first heard “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)”, single number three, it sounded like a retreat, an admission that nothing could match the scruffy brightness of that first effort. But on further listening, “Kiss with a Fist” feels more like the most traditional number on an album straining to be something new.
That’s not to say that it’s a bad number. It’s obviously brilliant. It’s a pitch-perfect pop song in the KT Tunstall vein, with Florence sneering her way into our hearts. But just look at the haunting menace of “Drumming Song”, the sheer ambition of “Cosmic Love”, the celebratory pop of “Hurricane Drunk”.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) You've Got the Love
04) Hurriacane Drunk
03) Kiss With A Fist
02) Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
01) Drumming Song |
![](http://i47.tinypic.com/2zzs10j.jpg) | 11. "La Roux"
by La Roux
Having spent months all over the media and topping the BBC’s annual Sound Of poll, Little Boots should be running things by now. But despite the easy-going catchiness of ‘New In Town’, she’s so far failed to break the top ten. La Roux, on the other hand, should be the underdog. You wouldn’t expect the androgynous looks and sharp falsetto of singer Elly Jackson to easily strike such a chord with the record-buying public, yet massive single ‘In For The Kill’ spent weeks in the upper reaches of the charts. Even the music is a surprise win: where Little Boots’ tunes feel like glossy 21st Century hits, La Roux is pure retro synth-pop.
Of course, everyone’s going a bit ‘80s at the moment, but La Roux’s debut is the ultimate expression of our newfound love for that once-maligned decade. Much of that comes down to Jackson’s low-profile partner Ben Langmaid. He helped introduce her to the likes of the Human League and Eurythmics, whose unmistakable presence is felt on every track. Yet for all the ripping off of their electronic forebears, the pair have created an unforgettable and edgy pop record.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Colourless Colour / In For The Kill
04) Tigerily
03) Im Not Your Toy
02) Quicksand
01) Bulletproof |
![](http://i47.tinypic.com/s12tlt.jpg) | 10. "She Wolf"
by Shakira
She Wolf is clearly designed to be Shakira’s “club” album, and she has said in interviews that she scoured the world for some of the hottest beats she could find for it, even if the end result was just her working with the Neptunes on four tracks and Wyclef Jean on one other (producers John Hill and Amanda Ghost fill out the rest). Though the furiously-catchy title track serves as a surprisingly-effective 21st century update to the disco sound of yore, Epic knew it was in trouble when the radio-friendly single failed to crack the Top 10 and more press was being made about the shot-by-shot male remake of its music video (simply dubbed “He Wolf”) than the album itself. Epic then pulled a fast one by taking Shakira’s Lil’ Wayne-featuring collaboration for Timbaland’s Shock Value II album (“Give It Up to Me”) and making it the second single in America, stripping it from Shock Value II so that it could be added onto a redone US version of She Wolf and ultimately delaying the album’s stateside release date by a month, even as the international releases still went on as planned.
In truth, Epic probably made the right move, as She Wolf is the least Shakira-sounding record in the Latin diva’s entire catalog.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) She Wolf
04) Did It Again
03) Mon Amour
02) Why Wait
01) Men In This Town |
![](http://i50.tinypic.com/27x33ft.jpg) | 09. "The Resistance"
by Muse
The Resistance's bold flight from the constraints of human reason takes a little while to get up to warp speed. Uprising - the album's first single - is a deceptively conventional glitter-stomp melange of the Dr Who theme and Blondie's Call Me. Next up, the title track posits a theoretically grisly but in practice quite palatable hybrid of U2 and David Guetta. But it's only after Undisclosed Desires has offered Depeche Mode the chance to beef up New Life with an extra disco twist that hyper-space really beckons. As the second half of The Resistance proceeds - through a lizard-worshipping thrash metal re-write of Lay All Your Love on Me (Unnatural Selection), to the closing Exogenesis, a three-part, 13-minute "symphony", which triumphantly realises a vision of classical music first outlined by Bruno from Fame - the essentially contradictory nature of its grandiose vision becomes ever more apparent. The foundation stones of Muse's musical edifice are the monolithic oeuvres of Abba, Queen and Rush while a quest for the band's real philosophical or architectural touchstones would probably lead you towards Ayn Rand and Albert Speer.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Uprising
04) Resistance
03) Undisclosed Desires
02) MK Ultra
01) Unnatural Selection |
![](http://i45.tinypic.com/o8w01x.jpg) | 08. "Memento Mori"
by Flyleaf
Memento Mori has a variety of sounds. The pop-rock tracks like "Tiny Heart" and "Treasure" are solid with excellent vocals and great melodies. Flyleaf has far outdone any comparable tracks on their debut album. If you're looking for an all out hard rock album that reflects the lead single "Again", Momento Mori is not it. The sounds range from the lighter fare to harder, driving, alt-rock.
Memento Mori's highlight for me was "Swept Away", one of the album's harder songs. It features lead singer Lacey Mosely describing a friend who's in a dark place while she pleads to them to follow God. Musically and lyrically, the track has a strong duality as the two sides square off in a bout of spiritual warfare. It's marked with layers of eerie and distorted sound effects including what sounds like inhuman growls. The effects add mood, atmosphere, and weight to the conflict.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Chasm
04) Tiny Heart / Treasure
03) Again
02) Beautiful Bride
01) Slept Away |
![](http://i49.tinypic.com/2u8kqbc.jpg) | 07. "Artwork"
by The Used
The guys in The Used have accomplished quite a bit, and have a lot they can be proud of. Over the course of their career they’ve written a number of great songs and released a collection of diverse albums. This diversity, coupled with a great live show, helped their albums achieve gold and even platinum status and allowed them to headline around the globe. Despite these accomplishments, though, the one thing the band hadn’t pulled off was an album that didn’t contain any filler – although Lies for the Liars came close. It turns out that they just needed one more attempt in order to finally reach that goal because Artwork consists entirely of great songs and it is, again, slightly different than previous albums. It’s a strong possibility that a lot of hardcore fans are going to have problems dealing with the restraint that is exercised on this album. It’s possible that they’re going to be upset that the band’s more dissonant moments have been (mostly) moved to a supporting role. It’s also a definite possibility that those same people are going to lament the streamlined sound that the band uses on this album. All of these things are possible, but none of them should be considered permanent problems. The Used have taken the best elements of their previous releases, refined them and delivered the strongest album of their career – an album that displays a subtle maturity in their songwriting that requires more than a single passive listen to fully grasp.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Sold My Soul
04) Kissing You Goodbye
03) Blood On My Hands
02) Empty With You
01) Born To Quit |
![](http://i49.tinypic.com/33xerl4.jpg) | 06. "Crash Love"
by AFI
The early songs in particular make it clear that Davey’s fascination with death and self-destruction has dissipated not one bit. And, while Crash Love never quite hits the lyrical highs of Sing The Sorrow, it’s earthier and more relatable on a human level.
Crash Love doesn’t demand the listener’s attention to the same degree that Decemberunderground did, but closer inspection reveals a more intricate and well-constructed album. It rarely lacks for quality, but it does occasionally sound a little disjointed: tracks like ‘Too Shy To Scream’ and ‘Medicate’ are fun, but they sound misplaced next to the more subtle and refined ‘Beautiful Thieves’ and ‘Veronica Sawyer Smokes,’ so the album itself doesn’t always add up to the sum of its parts. Nonetheless, Crash Love is an unexpectedly focused affair, and a couple of AFI classics-in-waiting therein make it well-worth a flutter.
TOP 5 TRACKS:
05) Darling, I Want to Destroy You
04) Medicate
03) Beautiful Thieves
02) Cold Hands
01) Too Shy To Scream |
