THE FINAL ROUND
It's that time again! The biggest stan competition is coming to a close! As we say goodbye to the flop 3rd season of The Song Game, I feel as if the finale will be big. So please thoroughly read every submission, and vote!
DUCA - BRITNEY SPEARS
"Toxic"
Quote:
Arguably Britney's strongest single and unquestionably her most appealing song is "Toxic." The insanely catchy track follows an Indian theme with the Middle Eastern-tinged melody, featuring Bollywood strings, a great spy-guitar line in the chorus, harmonic minor scale tones and the "With a taste of your lips/I'm on a ride, you're toxic/I'm slippin' under/With a taste of a poison paradise/I'm addicted to you/Don't you know that you're toxic" hook that lodges itself firmly in your head and refuses to let go. The song dabbles in hip-hop, with a strong, throaty, powerfully addicting vocal. "Toxic" was Britney's first real crossover track since "Baby One More Time,” being embraced even by rock and metal fans, with brilliant covers by grunge-throwback artists. "Toxic" could have been just another mediocre pop song in the hands of any other singer than Britney's. She made it a delirious, intoxicating rush that worked better as an individual moment than any of her other singles.
The iconic video had a budget of $1 million, and was highly critically acclaimed. It was praised for it's outstanding visual effects, a completely different strictly structured choreography and it is said to be incredible to watch because it made the rest of Britney's videos look like child's play. For the scenes in which Britney was naked covered in diamonds, the critics praised her for not being like most artists who flaunt their pure sexuality, because she totally understands that she's naughty and nice, that she's the girl next door gone bad who is constantly titillating you. In the video, Britney has multiple alter egos: she's a blond-haired flight attendant, red-haired superheroine in a tight black catsuit and a black-haired femme fatale. The video followed Britney as she gains access to a vault from which she steals a vial of green poison. In the end, she kisses her unfaithful boyfriend just before pouring the poison into his mouth, killing him. It topped many best of lists and is considered one of the best videos of all time.
The musically adventurous track was a worldwide #1 single for weeks and ended up the album’s biggest hit, and the bestselling and the most successful single of 2004 by a female artist. It gained Britney credibility amongst critics and snagged a Grammy in 2005. The song was placed high on numerous best of lists, including the best of the decade lists, compiled by Rolling Stone and many others. The critics credited Britney and the track itself for defining the sound of dance-pop for the rest of the decade, while adding that the track still sounded fresh and futuristic and also said that “Toxic” was a rare kind of song that transcends genre boundaries and that Britney's delivery defined her legacy. They also praised Britney for no longer trying to break away from her 90's teen pop image and style, and for being comfortable having fun and not trying to generate any type of calculated controversy, while acting like an adult.
*
More than any other artist, Britney Spears is the driving force behind pop. She has sold millions of records, she is a media fixture regardless of what she is or isn't doing, and among female singers of the era, many of whom followed in her footsteps, her celebrity star power can't be rivaled. When she broke through, she didn't just become a successful artist, she became a phenomenon. Well-crafted contemporary dance-pop and sentimental ballads that serve as its heart made her a star, and she keeps on delivering the goods, commercially too. Topping the charts and launching hit singles into orbit has become something predictable when talking about her, but what isn't predictable is her music, cause musically, she is extremely versatile, and each of her albums is an entertaining and satisfying listen.
As she matured, her music became more adult while still recognizably Britney, starting from her third self-titled album, on which she had found and refined her voice and showed enough of a reinvention to suggest that she knew what to do after the teen-pop phenomenon passed. Her songs have matured lyrically, especially on "In The Zone", where she upped the artistic stakes and helped completely redefine the notion of what “dance-pop” was in the new millennium. Throughout her days, she delivered slightly more up-tempo songs such as "Stronger," which showcased the side of Britney gave us fun, sing-along hits that didn't sound cliché, the self-penned "Everytime," which was genuinely a quality, soft piano based ballad, followed by "I'm A Slave 4 U" which signified a shift in her sound, from more wholesome teen pop to the sexier, more electronic influenced sound she owns now. Even though there was a brief period of time in late 2007 and early 2008 where it was nearly impossible to go a whole day without hearing some random Britney-related bad news, it’s amazing how well she was able to get back on the wagon and deliver two remarkably well-received albums as the decade drew to a close, pulling off one of the most incredible U-turns in pop culture history. Expectations for her post-breakdown material were low, but then the phenomenal comeback singles "Gimme More" and the synth-heavy "Womanizer" from her most recent albums confirmed that the pop world is all the better having Britney back, and all the bad predictions for what might follow went out the window. "Blackout," which salvaged Britney's career as a pop artist in the face of a personal breakdown and firmly entrenched Britney as a dance club diva, also proved that she is a smart business woman, as she was cognizant enough to realize she should hire the best, even if she wasn't at her best.
Britney has always been something else, and she has delivered some of the best singles of the last twelve years. She also showed a progression in style and substance from school uniform-wearing pop ingenue to sultry motorik saucepot, while her iconic hits proved their cultural cachet and became classic pop moments. She certainly doesn't have the pipes of Christina, but it's not as easy as it looks to make her songs sound as good as they do and her discography proves that she is incomparable to any other popstar out there. Her voice makes her a distinctive pop singer. She does have a slightly limited vocal range, but she has adapted her voice and makes for a far pleasanter listen than the over-belting by other contemporaries, while her songs remain distinctive.
Despite many fresh pop stars pouring out from everywhere, Britney Spears remains a household name that remains untouched by comparison, to any other and within a decade, we have seen her grow into the amazingly strong woman she is today. She is my inspiration, I grew up with her music, I love her image, her presence, all of her albums and songs, cause they are each one of a kind and they mean a lot to me. For me, she is the greatest pop star since the inception of popular music, the indisputable Queen of Pop, an immortal artist. Intoxicatingly over-the-top perfectly executed pop songs are a hard thing to pull off, and although many claim to dislike her and especially her high-energy cuts (which, without question, play to her strengths as a performer,) she is their guilty pleasure. Stellar tracks like "...Baby One More Time," "(You Drive Me) Crazy," "Oops!...I Did It Again," "Stronger," "I'm A Slave 4 U," "Me Against The Music," “Toxic, "Everytime," "Gimme More," "Piece Of Me," "Womanizer," "Circus" and "Hold It Against Me" only come once in a lifetime, and they are some of Britney's biggest hits, that have helped her define her latter-day legacy even more.
When she released her debut at the tail end of the last millennium, few would have predicted that she would still be around today. They say a pop star will always remain a pop star as long as they keep churning out hits, but pop stars come and go every year, and very few of them make truly lasting impacts like those that Britney has. What's remarkable about Britney and her hits is that no other song since her debut was matchable in terms of cultural impact. She was the pop culture sensation for the longest time and she got one thing that few stars are ever afforded: true star treatment. The top songwriters. The best producers. The hottest beats. She pushed away from teen pop and toward pure pop bliss, and her relentless hooks and rhythms wounded up defining the sound of a decade. Despite all the success she's enjoying, she is not an overrated artist and she is still the girl next door she was before all the fame. Britney is arguably the biggest pop artist of the past decade and no part of her high-gloss collection just makes a mark, lingering in the memory, it is an essential piece of the past ten years of pop history and deserves better than dismissal by so-called discerning listeners. Vote for her.

SUPASPAZ - KELLY CLARKSON
"Since U Been Gone"
Quote:
Ever since she competed on (and won) the first season of "American Idol," I have loved Kelly Clarkson. She has an incomparable voice among today's pop music scene -- not just in her technical prowess, but in the perfect emotional performance that she can give for any song. Sometimes, that means showing off her pipes and belting impressive notes; other times, it involves a subtle delivery that allows her pain and sorrow to soak through. Regardless, that woman really knows how to sing. In addition, she admirably aims for dignity and artistry in her career, always striving to write and record great music that she is proud to put forth as a representation of herself. In an industry obsessed with instant and guaranteed success, that is unfortunately becoming a rare quality.
The song that I feel best represents Kelly Clarkson's career is "Since U Been Gone." Not only her biggest and most critically-acclaimed hit, it's also her best: a perfect slice of pop music heaven. It's impossible to hear Kelly belting out that empowering chorus and not be transported to a place of complete euphoria.

UNUSUALBOY - CHRISTINA AGUILERA
"Dirrty"
Quote:
Well the reason why I picked Christina is because I think that she's such a talented girl and has one of the best voices ever! Her album was coming out when the game started so I decided to play with her; you can say she's cocky and she has a bitchy attititude but you can't deny that all of us have ever sung at least one of her songs: since Genie In The Bottle, Lady Marmalade, Beautiful and in this case Dirrty that it's one of her signature songs. I like Christina and her music, she always has an amazing ballad that makes us feel chills or a catchy song that makes you dance.
