If Donald Trump goes down in flames he's going to take a lot of Republicans down with him. Very few people go to the polls and vote split ticket. The vast majority vote straight party ticket. It's in the GOP's best interest for Trump to not totally bomb and get as many people to the polls as possible. No one's going to vote for an obvious loser and that is less GOP votes. Actual smart people like Ryan and Rubio realize this, but Cruz only cares about himself and his 2020 chances.
He could have not endorsed from his couch, same effect. Now everyone but his base either see him as a clown or hate him for being a traitor.
