Lil Wayne sells 1 million copies first week

Lil Wayne has done it again. Weezy F. Baby has repeated history by selling a million copies in his first week with his latest album Tha Carter IV.


According to HITS Daily Double, the Young Money rapper’s ninth album will arrive at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling a whopping 1,000,690 copies in its opening week. While impressive, it wasn’t quite enough to top its predecessor Tha Carter III, which sold 1,005,545 when it debuted in June 2008.

That gives Weezy the second-highest first week sales of the year, displacing Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne, but still behind Lady Gaga’s Born This Way (1.1 million).

Tha Carter IV also broke the U.S. iTunes Store’s single-week album sales record by registering over 300,000 downloads in its first four days of release, reports Billboard.

Young Money president Mack Maine celebrated the news on Twitter. “We did a MILL in the 1st week AGAIN!!! WE including all of u who helped and purchased da Album!! Love y’all!!! #YMCMB…C4 boom,” he wrote, adding, “A old head once said…..’Men lie women lie numbers don’t’ C4 milli in da first week.”

Nielsen SoundScan will release its final numbers on Wednesday.

Cash Money/Universal Republic hip-hop star Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV will certainly remain #1 for at least another week after scoring close to a million in its debut on the charts.

Label principals Ronald “Slim” and Bryan “Baby” Williams, the New Orleans brothers who have worked with Weezy since he was a teenager at the label’s very beginning, were ecstatic at the news.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Lil Wayne and everyone here at Cash Money,” said Slim. “It’s a tribute to the hard work and commitment he’s always shown, since the beginning.”

"I consider him my son, part of the Cash Money family from the very start,” added Baby. “One thing I've learned. No record is safe from him.”
