tbh i feel like if i was first exposed to kpop by 2NE1, i wouldnt have gotten into it that much
even tho CL is Queen & most of their singles (especially 'Falling In Love') slay, they dont hit me like most other groups do.
Idk, the first kpop vid that ever exposed me to the existence of kpop was I Am The Best the day it first came out.
It was the perfect time too, Gaga was huge, electronic pop was huge, and 2NE1 kind of came with a high quality hit, just in a different language. The aesthetics were like US pop girls, except x10.
Idk, i was like a kid in a candy store after that day. I owe it all to them.
I agree about 2NE1
I like their style and they have good songs (I live for I Am The Best) but when I watch them, I feel nothing. I guess it was just a time you had to be around to experience to REALLY understand. I feel the same way about Big Bang
I like the new gen YG groups a lot tho
EDIT: come to think of it, most old or 2nd gen groups don't really do much for me. TVXQ and current Wonder Girls are the only older groups that I'm sorta into and for obvious reasons

i was thinking of that exact song when i posted that lol. its a major bop now, but back then i wasnt really into hardcore electronic like i am now (tbh i didnt even care for Gaga until i heard 'Eh Eh') lol.
Sistar's 'Shake It' hit me at the perfect time late last year. most of my faves were on vacation/doing god knows what so when i saw i randomly saw that Recommended Video, the snatching Hyolyn & Bora (especially Bora) did on me, whew

i think it definitely is a timing kind of thing.
i feel very disconnected from all the newer groups praised in this thread, unlike back in the day when GG, 2NE1, Super Junior, Big Bang, f(x), After School, and 4minute all ruled this thread.
The exception being BlackPink. Literally the last kpop group I actually got really into was D-Unit and they like, disbanded two years ago or something.

Lowkey thought I was the only one. Like I like them and some of their music, specifically from Still Alive, but they give me absolutely nothing otherwise.
2NE1 on the other hand were really amazing to me. But then again, I became a fan right when IATB came out, so I was there for the best part of their career, their best releases, 2NE1 TV, etc. I suppose it may really have been a "had to be there" thing because they're like...keystones of k-pop to me.
I am so glad I started stanning for the queens when they released Try To Follow Me I thought that was the best kpop song ever too but wew I didnt know about the storm of quality content and talent that was about to obliterate me years after that!
i thought i was the only one that never got swept up by BigBang
i LOVE the Made album and another one, but besides that and Taeyang's stuff, i still didnt feel much

this tea though
2NE1 TV was a huge part of the obsession too. You get overwhelmed with all this kpop except 2NE1 was always marketed as accessible girls that were also bad ass bitches. There was only 4 of them so it was easy to consume, and their personalities all showed through individually.
