People know of Lorde because Royals became big. Just like people suddenly knew Ke$ha when Tik Tok became big, and Katy when I Kissed A Girl became big etc. They know that person because it's hard to not too.
But there is a difference between "knowing" someone and actually knowing them. People know Lorde, but how many people know her as a musician and how many people know her as the talented girl from NZ who has been successful.
Lorde is consistently on sites like Ryan Seacrest (especially on Facebook) and her brand is well known thanks to Royals and PH. But the content is overlooked, it's the success that brought her fame.
But Lana had no hit single until after her album sold 4 million copies. People know Lana as a musician, not a celebrity, thanks to her album doing solid. Lana got fame from her music as a whole, not because she had a hit and was suddenly requested on every chat show like Lorde was.
Imo Lorde and Lana have two different types of Fame that aren't comparable at this point.
