The last major hurricane was Gaston in August, but it didn't come anywhere close to Matthew's current intensity and destructive potential.

Overall, major hurricanes have been pretty sparse in the Atlantic during the last few years:

2012 - Michael, Sandy
2013 - none
2014 - Gonzalo
2015 - Danny, Joaquin
2016 - Gaston, Matthew

An Air Force reconnaissance plane recently measured a peak SFMR wind
of 143 kt and then 138 kt during this mission's eye penetrations.
Furthermore, the satellite presentation has improved considerably
with a distinct eye surrounded by a ring of very deep convection.
The raw objective T-numbers from UW-CIMSS have been above 7.0 since
2100 UTC. On this basis, the initial intensity has been increased to
140 kt, making Matthew a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane
Wind Scale. This is the first Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic
basin since Hurricane Felix in 2007.

My city wasn't directly hit by the hurricane since it didn't hit Venezuela but we saw consequences of it going through the Caribbean sea last night. It was a terrible night.

I'm so happy I don't live in Jamaica anymore. I forgot how bad hurricane and tropical storm season was and the preparations leading up to it and then the aftermath of fixing everything. Not really on good terms with my dad and his side of the family but I hope they stay safe.

Will never forget the year Hurricane Ivan completely destroyed my mom's house. We had to remodel the whole thing.
