I just listened to all the auditions, I can't believe how many had been studio recorded with the vocals edited so much! I thought we were just supposed to be singing?

Yeah, I was surprised too. I just went and recorded it on my computer and then immediately uploaded it. Editing your vocals take too much time anyway.

Still figuring out what I should sing next. The songs I have in mind are a lot different from each other as well.

You are I mean I don't care if you use an instrumental or whatever, but vocal enhancements are kind of like cheating; however, I can't really tell what is edited and what isn't so I just don't say anything at all.

Should it really be cheating to just throw on some reverb?

I mean some people just have better microphones which is going to naturally make every single one of their entries sound better.

I don't really want to name anyone but there were a few that were just riddled with editing which obviously make them sound better than they are and it's not fair to compare these recordings to people who are simply recording themselves singing and uploading it

I think maybe it needs to be reinforced that people shouldn't be editing any of their vocals, obviously some will sound a little better just from higher quality recordings anyway but using enhancements isn't fair and so if they upload an audition where it is clearly edited then they need to be told to do it again without the effects on their voice.

When you use reverb it fills out the sound of the voice, making it sound stronger and better than it actually is whereas if it's not used the vocals are more vulnerable and it's easier to hear the actual sound of the voice and if some people are using it and others aren't it doesn't allow for a fair comparison between people because obviously they are able to sound better than they are in reality.

...yet it's still fair to be using good microphones while others have none at all and can't afford one, making some vocals sound much better than theirs. Yet that's fair

Well I don't know how to edit vocals anyway (I recorded/uploaded my audition on my cell phone ) but I think I'm uploading mine on YouTube this week. I plan on doing Taylor's "Mine" and will be playing the guitar too (not that that matters).

But in all seriousness, that song is so powerful, emotional, and it's one of Carrie's hidden gems.

EDIT: Gonna record the song later. I totally forgot that my headphones have a microphone; hopefully it's better than using my computer's microphone.

People can't help having a good microphone but they CAN help purposefully putting loads of effects on their voice purposefully to make them sound better. A good microphone won't make a crap singer sound good but vocal effects certainly can be used to improve what your voice sounds like.
