She's not the artsy, intellectual type so let's not delude ourselves by saying her album/experimental tracks are superior but let's also acknowledge the fact that, aside from the Beatles, her catalogue of hits is the best there is.

I agree with this.

A good song is a good song, whether "experimental" or straight-up gay pop. I'm not gonna limit Madonna to only her 80s hits just because she's Madonna. It's not really fair to limit her discography like that, which has been consistently good for almost 30 years

I'd rather have "Ray of Light" any day over "Lucky Star", and not because it's experimental, artsy or anything like that - for me it's just a superior song.
I think people should simply vote for the songs they like better - as they did...

I concur, I'm not even a fan but my God the woman's discography is amazing and versatile. I just got into her music late last year.

It hasn't been consistently good since the 80's. It's been really hit and miss for two decades now, but when she hits, she hits HARD.

ROL is a phenomenal song IMO, but I don't agree that #'s 10 or 7 have any business near the top twenty.

We'll just have to disagree. I enjoy every album, except for Bedtime Stories (which is still pretty decent).

I think my problem with her post-80's stuff is that she tried too hard to switch gears between albums and the transition of styles was never smooth. The whole "re-invention" thing seemed more natural in her heyday. She became more of a dilettante in the 90's, taking cursory detours into new sounds and themes but didn't always take enough time to do them justice.
For instance, Bedtime Stories is all over the map, and Music is really diffuse as well. The albums don't really sound coherent as a whole. But I applaud her for being braver than most mainstream artists, and she did yield some very impressive hits post- Immaculate.

Well, it's an eighties song - so it would have made sense. Although it would not have made my preferred Madonna top 20 either.

"Express Yourself" is a female empowering anthem released as the second single off Like a Prayer. It was very successful worldwide, achieving Top 5 in many countries - in the US it peaked at #2 and in the UK at #5.
She performed it live at The Blond Ambition Tour, The Girlie Show Tour and The Re-Invention Tour, as well as in the 1989 VMAs. During the Sticky & Sweet Tour, she performed it live many times in the "requested song" part of the show, too.
The video was directed by David Fincher and is inspired by Metropolis. It's one of Madonna's best in my opinion, and it depicts roles that men and women play in a futuristic society, portraying Madonna as the wife of a big entrepreneur.
Great song, too - 9 from me!

Such a ****ing classic. Truly one of the most empowering songs of the past thirty years - almost defiant in its pro-women statement. Love the "callback" to Respect Yourself by The Staple Singers.

Five of the remaining songs got a 10 from me, so I'm pleased

Speak for yourself? I've loved the song since I was three. First Madonna song I ever fell in love with.

Wait now! Not the truth!
My preferred top twenty, in no particular order, would have consisted of:
Music
Like a Prayer
Like a Virgin
Papa Don't Preach
Crazy for You
Borderline
Into the Groove
Don't Tell Me
Cherish
Get Together
Secret
Vogue
Open Your Heart
Angel
Oh Father
Dear Jessie
Hung Up
Take a Bow
Ray of Light
Beautiful Stranger
Majority 80s, as it should be.
There are some artists who made better POP music after their first ten years (Kylie springs to mind), and there are others who very definitively did not. (Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Michael, probably Prince).

So you have a personal connection/nostalgia factor with it. I'm not nostalgically attached to any Madge songs because I didn't get into her entire discography until 2010. When all the BTW comparisons happened, I couldn't even remember the melody to Express Yourself. It's kind of forgettable. Obviously I'm more familiar with it now since all of the controversy, but that's why I said it probably wouldn't be this high if this happened 18 months ago. The song is more popular now then it probably ever was in 1989. It didn't even go #1.

You act like it went in at forty. It climbed all the way to number two?

I didn't act like anything I just said it didn't go #1, while other, more memorable Madonna songs did

I actually do like your Top 20, though I probably wouldn't include "Angel", or "Beautiful Stranger, or "Dear Jessie" (even if I love the latter a lot).
No shade towards Ms. Janet, but as of right now I'm not interested at all on her pre-Control and post-Velvet Rope stuff.

Make it post-All for You, and I'd counter - who is? Who is?!?
But the differences in this rate and Janet's rate (in which the majority of the singles came from before Design of a Decade) makes me really interested in seeing what the Whitney, Kylie and Mariah rates look like.

What the what?! "Express Yourself" is one of Madonna's most popular, most enduring, most iconic hits. That's probably why the similarities in "Born This Way" were so controversial— everyone noticed them.

No, I think a few people noticed and then everyone else latched on to the idea I have yet to see any real similarities that would cause the outrage that it caused.

The chorus melody is almost the same.
But Express Yourself shares a lot of melodic similarities to The Staple Singers' Respect Yourself ... this is why Madonna did not sue.
