Anonymous asked: Mine is her best song IMHO. Why does T.Swift appeal to such a broad range of people? What is it that makes "alt muzik dudez" love her music. Why is she the next Morrissey? Is she the next Morrissey? I really want her to cover "Will Never Marry" by Moz. It would be perfect.
i think she just writes very good songs, and i guess it helps that unlike her contemporaries in modern chart country she doesn’t explicitly refer to cultural touchstones in her lyrics that might alienate one potential audience in order to court another - like you listen to country radio and every other song goes out of it’s way to mention pickup trucks or to indignantly proclaim that the singer is “country” or a “redneck” and they don’t care who doesn’t like it. not that there’s anything inherently wrong with those things, it just limits the potential audience for that music to people who identify as being part of the demographic being highlighted by the song. it’s much more culturally insular music than taylor swift, who has a much subtler and more broadly appealing way of relating to her audience through signifiers than other country artists.
like in “ours” when she’s all like “any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored” - feels just as specific and personal as any remarks by tim mcgraw or whoever about driving trucks or living in a small town but is much more relatable just by virtue of the fact that tattoos are popular across many different demographics. there are probably just as many alt muzik dudez and dudettez that like tattoos as there are traditional country listeners at this point, and and i mean even the older country audience at this point probably relates to the line more than they disapprove of it
but i mean mainly i think it’s just because she’s insanely talented and likeable and continues to deliver the goods over and over again at a very high level. like i love paramore, but i think the reason they haven’t attained the broader critical respect and cultural cachet that t.swift has is that she’s just working on a higher level than they are in terms of songwriting - “the story of us” on speak now is very obviously like t.swift doing a paramore song, but it doesn’t come off as derivative because the extremely high level of her craft just ensures that it’s a better paramore song than most paramore songs. she’s just too good, and only seems to be getting better.
This one. Let's just give the crown now, Taylor Swift is the next Morrissey.
