The Mouse that roared. (article in the Sydney morning Herald)
Quote:
A kids' club based on a loveable innocent Disney character provided the building blocks for a helluva sexy, sensual career, Christine Sams writes.
Big smile, cute button nose, a world-famous performer ... it's amazing the effect Mickey Mouse has had on the world of pop. Forget childhood stars who fade into oblivion, Christina Aguilera is among a group of megastars who had her grounding in the Mickey Mouse Club, the long-running American television show that began in the 1950s and had revivals in the 1970s and 1980s.
It was the sixth and seventh seasons of the Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s that proved a breeding ground for superstardom. Aguilera - with her feisty voice and dance skills - was a cast member, alongside Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
It's no accident Aguilera has found global fame as an adult. Aguilera filmed at least 70 episodes of the Mickey Mouse Club, for which she received extensive dance and vocal training. She emerged from the experience with a healthy work ethic and finely tuned onstage technique. And that's not to mention the powerful singing voice, which can still knock the socks off her competitors.
Ambition was also a key ingredient. Aguilera didn't make the cut the first time she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club (at 10 years of age), but she went back for a second try. By the time the popular series came to an end in the US, when she was 14, Aguilera was already nicknamed "the diva" by her cast mates.
The singer shrugs this off, having always acknowledged her keen interest in success. "You learn fast in this business and, once I knew where I wanted to go, I didn't let anyone get in my way," she has said.
Flash forward from the days when she was in denim jackets and bobby socks to 2007, and Aguilera is a one-woman phenomenon. Aged 26, she is expecting her first child and is touring Australia with her Back To Basics show, in which she morphs into a shapely and sultry sophisticate from the 1930s and 1940s.
"The sexuality coming forward on this record is more softened. It's more pin-up, tongue-in-cheek. It's playful," Aguilera says. The polished performance (with its elaborate sets and costumes) is long way from the stringy black hair and leather chaps of her Dirrty era.
But like all experienced performers (particularly those raised on the rigorous routines of television) Aguilera is intensely aware of the power of a shifting image.
Even if her look has been smoothed out for Back To Basics, Aguilera still relies on a heavy dose of femininity and sexuality to wow her fans. Embracing her womanhood - and flaunting it - has been a vital part of Aguilera's success. I feel empowered when I express myself sexually. Any woman who's going to strongly express herself sexually, there's always a backlash," she has said. "Throughout the years, men have tried to put a restraint on how women are allowed to behave. If you do this, you're not sexy enough. And if you don't do that, you're too sexy ... there are so many double standards. It's very important to me as a female to play upon sexuality and be very strong while incorporating that in my art and work."
Aguilera's personal life has often been a subject of discussion in the press, but unlike Spears and Timberlake, she appears to have avoided some of the pitfalls of celebrity relationships - including being used as a vehicle for success. Aguilera points to the normality of her husband, Jordan Bratman, as a key factor in the happiness of their marriage. "He's not trying to be on the cover of magazines. He's not trying to make a record. He's just good old Jordy," she has said. He is a huge fan of her sexy shows: "My husband supports every pelvic thrust. He'll even ask me why I'm covering up and tell me to show it all off."
As a former child star, Aguilera is no doubt aware of the spotlight that may be cast on her own offspring. Having sold 30million albums, the singer was a dynamo performer from the word go. If there was ever a mouse that roared, Aguilera is a woman who embodies the success of adults making the transition from child stardom: she is as sassy, hardworking and determined as ever.

here´s what some of the ppl (stones-fans) who were at the concert had to say:
Quote:
Christina Aguilera blew me away with her singing on Live With Me. It was a blistering version, and she definitely helped take it up a notch. Go figure!

As for Christina Aguilera, I have to say I was a little puzzled at first when I saw her arriving on Sunday night. "The Stones, with Christina Aguilera?" Well, the girl has a fantastic voice and the version rocked. The surprise was gone on Wednesday, but the song still rocked. Aguilera was less playful than Sunday ( but I guess more focused and so were Keith and Ronnie to deliver one of the grooviest versions of this Let it Bleed favorite.

interesting article from billboard:

Who's Next?: Arena Tours
June 29, 2007 - Touring
By Ray Waddell, Nashville
At age 26, Christina Aguilera is among the top-grossing artists in the world for the first half of 2007. Conversely, the plug was recently pulled on 25-year-old Kelly Clarkson's summer arena tour because of lower-than-expected ticket sales.
The varied fortunes of these two promising pop artists aptly illustrates the fragility of box-office stardom—and why the concert industry is grappling with a serious artist-development conundrum. Even as touring remains immune to many digitally induced music business ills, the concert business will ultimately face a disconcerting changing of the guard that must be reckoned with.
Fact one: Six of the top 10 and 11 of the top 25 tours of 2006 feature acts that will qualify for their AARP cards within 10 years.
Fact two: Of the remaining acts, four—Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band—have shown the kind of consistency during the past 10 years that indicates they will remain top draws a decade from now. And, to paraphrase a stockbroker's cover-your-ass mantra, past performance is no assurance of future results.
Among the 10 top-grossing acts of the last decade, only one -- Dave Matthews Band -- broke in the 1990s or later. The rest first cut their touring teeth in the 1970s or earlier. In fact, outside of DMB the "newest" band in the bunch is U2.
While the Rolling Stones have blazed a trail that shows U2 could well have another 20 years of hard touring ahead of it, simple biology tells us that the majority of the top earners of the past decade probably should not be counted on to deliver box-office gold in 2020.
