My album review:
1. "Voodoo" - A great opener; catchy chorus and awesome breakdown before the bridge and at the end. 10/10
2. "Champagne Problems" - Honestly the bridge of this song and beat slay. It has grown on me since first listen. 8/10
3. "Close" (feat. Tove Lo) - I can see why this was chosen as the lead single: it shows the themes of the album all together (minus the more negative aspects) and is the best feature. 8/10
4. "Chainsaw" - His best ballad so far. This has the potential to be a huge hit and I love the way the song builds up. 10/10
5. "Touch" - This is great but I think some of you overrated it. Why isn't this explicit like the others? Maybe it will grow on me more but the second and last choruses are truly something. 7/10
6. "Bacon" (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) - This has grown on me so much. I was hoping Ty Dolla $ign would contribute something special to the song ala Fifty Harmony's "Work from Home" but it's a cheap throw away verse. 9/10
7. "Good Girls" (feat. Big Sean) - The message/theme of this song has truly something going for it. Honestly Big Sean isn't memorable at all and doesn't add much to the song. Other than that, I love it. 8/10
8. "The Difference" - The breakdown in this song is orgasmic and makes it like 10 times better. However, there are some elements that could be beefed up in some way to elevate the song. 8/10
9. "Don't Make Me Choose" - This is one of my personal favorites. The chorus is amazing (especially when it changes melody) and the message is great. It also shows a lot of depth to Nick. 10/10
10. "Under You" - Sorry but you guys are overrating this track. It's good but not pop perfection or whatever. This trend is done is done in pop music and it won't be a huge smash like you all thing. However I really like the story, and side note, I can't stop singing/hearing "Style" in the chorus. 8/10
11. "Unhinged" - This is a great ballad but not quite as good as "Chainsaw". The lyrics are so personal and emotional for Nick, and I guess me too since I almost teared up. 9/10
12. "Comfortable" - In my opinion, THE best song on this album. Nick blends so many things together that could have been a mess but it's so smooth. The Allen Iverson speech between the second and final chorus is a nice touch too. Talk about saving the best for last. Also is that Demi on backup vocals? 10/10
13. "Testify" - My personal favorite of the three deluxe tracks. It's great and efficiency acts as a transition between the standard tracks and the final two bonuses. 8/10
14. "When We Get Home" (feat. Daniella Mason) - Definetly the worse song on the record for me. I had never heard of Daniella Mason and the majority of people haven't either so why doesn't she shine on this track and feel like a backup singer? And that chorus - very lackluster. 5/10
15. "That’s What They All Say" - This is pretty good but the backup harmonization becomes a bit too used and reliable halfway through. The theme of the song shows more diversity to
Last Year Was Complicated overall though. 7/10
Overall this album is a lot better than his debut. It's more cohesive and is a great step in a direction that fits him sonically. I do think
Nick Jonas had higher highs and more standouts even though this record is better. The melodies in the verses also blend together to often and are similar across many songs. However this album has some great choruses.
