#08 - EXPRESS YOURSELF
Average: 9.0833 - Highest: 10 (x18), Lowest: 6 (x2)
Writers: Madonna, Stephen Bray
Producers: Madonna, Stephen Bray
(flop stan question: "Stephen" and "Steve" Bray are the same person, right?)
"Express Yourself" is a female empowering anthem released as the second single off Like a Prayer. It was very successful worldwide, achieving Top 5 in many countries - in the US it peaked at #2 and in the UK at #5.
She performed it live at The Blond Ambition Tour, The Girlie Show Tour and The Re-Invention Tour, as well as in the 1989 VMAs. During the Sticky & Sweet Tour, she performed it live many times in the "requested song" part of the show, too.
The video was directed by David Fincher and is inspired by Metropolis. It's one of Madonna's best in my opinion, and it depicts roles that men and women play in a futuristic society, portraying Madonna as the wife of a big entrepreneur.
Great song, too - 9 from me!

Great song, Express yourself. Again it should be top 5 at least. The video is one of her best ever.

If this rate had happened 18 months ago, this song would have maybe been Top 20 8.5 from me
Five of the remaining songs got a 10 from me, so I'm pleased

#07 - THE POWER OF GOOD-BYE
Average: 9.2361 - Highest: 10 (x18), Lowest: 5 (x1, no, not Ace)
Writers: Madonna, Rick Nowels
Producers: Madonna, William Orbit, Patrick Leonard
"The Power of Good-Bye" was released as the third (in the US)/ fourth (where Drowned World was already released) single off Ray of Light, reaching Top 20s of several countries. It peaked at #11 in the US and #6 in the UK.
I think that the only performance that I've seen of it was lipped, if I'm not mistaken. But I do not remember where that performance is from, and I don't even remember if it was really this song.
The video was shot in the same beach where "Cherish" was shot. It shows Madonna and her (ex?) lover playing chess. Then she throws all the pieces to the floor (is that worded right?) and they kiss - but something seems wrong. At the end, it seems like Madonna drowned herself in the sea - but that stays unclear, since she appears again a few seconds later.
9 from me, too.

As I already said, there was a point in this rate where this song managed to go #1. How WTF would be that?

"Substitute for Love" is one of my all-time favorite songs of hers, but I really think the top 20 should have been reserved for the songs that define her legacy, not the fan favorites.

Not bad! Frozen and Music probably shouldn't be there. But I'll deal.

So that means I'd have to give, for example, Lucky Star, anything more than 9?

Well, yeah anything from Immaculate Collection + a few stray hits here and there. She's not the artsy, intellectual type so let's not delude ourselves by saying her album/experimental tracks are superior but let's also acknowledge the fact that, aside from the Beatles, her catalogue of hits is the best there is.
