It was a farce, and she said it all the time about how she studied the "pop star" so much and wanted to emulate that to get famous. She basically used it as a means to get famous so that she could make the music she truly wanted to make.

Too bad she couldn't keep it up.

So basically, Gaga's decline was inevitable, because she never wanted to keep up the FameGa persona. Of course, her folly was thinking that she would still remain successful, and hopefully the last two eras have pressed the point home that she's fading.
